Yes—Roblox says it was founded in 2004. That refers to the company’s founding and early platform activity, not proof that Roblox was open to everyone that year. The company describes an initial group of a few hundred builders; its official materials do not give an exact date for general public access.
What happened in 2004?
Roblox’s company information says it was founded in 2004 by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel. A separate corporate milestone is more precisely dated: Roblox Corporation’s 2024 Form 10-K says the company was incorporated in Delaware in March 2004 (SEC filing).
Those statements establish that Roblox existed as a company in 2004. They do not establish that the platform had already launched for unrestricted public use.
Who could use Roblox in its early days?
Roblox says its first couple hundred builders included developers, investors, testers, and friends of the founders. That describes an early, limited community—not necessarily a public launch. The company’s support page also notes that identifying the first player is difficult because some early accounts remain active (Roblox Support).

Was Roblox publicly available in 2004?
The official company information and SEC materials cited here do not specify an exact public-release date or say that anyone could freely join in 2004. A secondary historical reference gives 2006 as the formal release year (Wikipedia), but that should be treated as a secondary-source account rather than a date established by the primary materials above.
So the careful distinction is: Roblox was founded in 2004 and had early builders, while the date when it became generally available is not confirmed by the cited primary sources.

What came before Roblox?
In a 2021 SEC-filed registration statement, Roblox’s corporate origin narrative says the founders programmed Interactive Physics, a 2D simulated physics lab, in 1989. The filing says that when starting Roblox in 2004, they aimed to extend the imagination and creativity associated with that project on a much larger scale. This is the company’s retrospective account of its inspiration, rather than a direct quotation from either founder (2021 SEC registration statement).
