In God of War (2018), the World Serpent recognizes Kratos’s axe, asks what god he is and why he has disturbed it, then warns him not to return until he can speak its language. The game leaves the serpent’s speech untranslated; that wording comes from a circulated copy of the game’s WGA Edition script.
What does the World Serpent say the first time?
The circulated script copy translates the serpent’s first words as: “That axe… I recognize it from somewhere. What god are you? Why do you disturb me?” It then tells Kratos: “Do not trouble me again, little god, until you have a tongue with which to speak to me.”
That translation makes an important distinction: the serpent recognizes the axe, not explicitly Kratos as the Ghost of Sparta. It asks Kratos what god he is rather than naming his past.
Why doesn’t the game subtitle the serpent?
The game presents the World Serpent’s speech as an obscure language, without translating its words for the player. Before the group reaches the horn, Mimir tells Atreus that the serpent speaks a tongue “more ancient even than these mountains,” and that he is the only one left in Midgard who speaks it. The script describes the serpent’s voice as a deep harmonic sound and marks translated lines “translation, do not subtitle.”

The English wording comes from a circulated script copy hosted on Scribd, marked Santa Monica Studio and “God of War WGA Edition.” The available evidence does not authenticate that copy against an official WGA-hosted publication, so its translation should be attributed to the circulated script rather than presented as a publicly issued official transcript. A report published November 8, 2025, also summarizes the first-meeting lines: Rafael Ramos, Ensinando a Vencer.
What does the serpent say when Mimir returns?
The later conversation is a separate scene, after Kratos and Atreus return with Mimir’s head. The serpent says, “You again. Have you come to sacrifice the axe?” Mimir introduces himself, and the serpent replies, “Yes… But there used to be more of you.”

When Mimir explains that they need a way to Jötunheim, the serpent initially recoils because the wording sounds as if they are friends of Odin. Mimir clarifies that they oppose Odin and are making a final journey for Atreus’s mother. The serpent says it understands that pain, then gives directions involving the sacred chisel and the Black Rune.
Why does the World Serpent find Atreus familiar?
In that later scene, the serpent says, “Something familiar about the boy. Do I know him?” Mimir answers, “No… that should not be the case,” then murmurs, “Curious…”

The dialogue establishes that the serpent senses something familiar about Atreus, but it does not explain why. The line is a mystery in the translated exchange; any specific explanation goes beyond what these words establish.

No. The November 8, 2025 report says the circulated script clarifies the first encounter’s translation but does not identify who blew the horn. The translated dialogue answers what the serpent says, not who summoned it.
