Alpha Pokémon are unusually large, red-eyed wild Pokémon that are especially powerful and difficult to catch. They will chase and attack when they notice you, but catching one can add a strong ally to your team and register its data in your Rotom Phone Pokédex. The Pokémon Company does not give a numerical Alpha-specific stat bonus in its published gameplay guidance, so their value is best understood through the tougher encounter and the chance to recruit one.
What makes a Pokémon an Alpha?
The Pokémon Company describes Alpha Pokémon as larger than their regular counterparts, with glowing red eyes. They are particularly powerful and difficult to catch. Once an Alpha notices you, it will chase and attack; this makes spotting one a potential threat, not just a chance to add a Pokémon to your collection.
That description comes from the official Making the Most of Your Adventure gameplay guidance for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. It establishes that Alphas are formidable, but does not give a specific stat multiplier or explain a fixed difference in stats, moves, or other battle characteristics.
Why catch an Alpha?
Add a formidable Pokémon to your team
The clearest reason is team value: The Pokémon Company says caught Alphas can make great allies. If you want that particular Pokémon on your roster, overcoming the tougher encounter gives you the chance to use it as a teammate.

Register it in the Pokédex
Catching Pokémon registers their data in the Rotom Phone Pokédex. Its entries can show details such as a Pokémon’s movements, cries, and habitats. This is a general benefit of catching Pokémon, not a separate Alpha-only reward. The game announcement also says Pokémon data can be registered by catching, evolving, or trading.
How to approach an Alpha encounter
Alphas are described as difficult to catch and aggressive when they spot you. The official guidance offers general capture advice rather than an Alpha-specific method:

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
- When a Pokémon may flee, hide from its view or approach from behind before throwing a Poké Ball.
- Battle to lower its HP; the official guidance says this makes a Pokémon easier to catch.
- During a fight with an Alpha, try to avoid being hit while you battle.
The official overview does not specify an Alpha catch rate, required Poké Ball, guaranteed tactic, or special capture formula. Treat stealth and lowering HP as general catching guidance, not a promise that every Alpha will react to those tactics in a particular way.

What the official information does—and does not—establish
The official description supports calling Alphas powerful, but it does not quantify how much stronger they are or establish a fixed combat advantage over an ordinary counterpart. It does not provide Alpha-specific IV or effort value details, a spawn rate, exact locations, a required level, or a guaranteed capture approach. Avoid assuming that mechanics from another Pokémon game apply here unless they are confirmed for Legends: Z-A.
