Alpha Pokémon are oversized, powerful wild Pokémon with glowing red eyes. They can spot, chase, and attack you, and they are harder to catch than ordinary Pokémon. You can find them in Lumiose City and Wild Zones; some appear at set locations, while others may spawn at random.
How to recognize an Alpha Pokémon
The Pokémon Company describes Alpha Pokémon as larger than regular members of their species, with glowing red eyes. They are particularly powerful and difficult to catch. If one notices you, it may chase and attack, so treat a sighting as a potentially dangerous encounter rather than an ordinary wild battle.

The practical differences from an ordinary Pokémon are size, red eyes, aggression, and catch difficulty. Additional differences reported for captured Alphas are described below, but those mechanics come from Serebii rather than the official Pokémon guidance.
Where Alpha Pokémon appear
According to Serebii’s Alpha Pokémon reference, Alphas begin appearing after the special mission “A Big Ol’ Bunnelby.” Some locations have guaranteed Alpha spawns; other eligible Pokémon can appear as Alphas by chance in Lumiose City. GameSpot’s October 15, 2025 guide also reports Alpha encounters in free-roam areas of Lumiose as well as Wild Zones.

#1 Best Overall
- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
Serebii reports chance-based spawn rates of 5% to 40%, depending on the species and location, and says the chance becomes active after you complete that zone’s Wild Zone survey task. It also reports that these Alpha spawns are typically about 10 levels above the initial spawn. These are specialist-reference figures, not official Pokémon-published odds; exact conditions and rates should be treated as version-sensitive.
Refreshing and timing Wild Zone encounters
GameSpot notes that some Pokémon are available only during the day or at night. Resting on a bench can change the day/night cycle. Its guide also recommends leaving a Wild Zone and returning after time has passed to refresh its spawns. These are exploration tips, not guarantees that a particular Alpha will appear.

How to approach and catch an Alpha
The official advice is to avoid being seen where possible: hide or approach from behind to make yourself harder to notice. If you enter battle, lowering the Pokémon’s HP makes it easier to catch. Neither tactic guarantees success, especially against an Alpha.
- Watch its attention. Keep out of sight or approach from behind when the area allows it; an Alpha that notices you may chase and attack.
- Battle if needed. Reduce its HP to improve your chance of catching it, while accounting for its strength.
- Choose a suitable ball. GameSpot recommends Great Balls or Ultra Balls after defeating an Alpha. This is guide advice, not an official catch rule or a guarantee.
What advantages do captured Alpha Pokémon have?
Serebii reports that a captured Alpha has its size set to maximum, receives three random maximum IVs and 252 HP EVs, and has a move it can normally learn with a TM already mastered as a Plus Move. These are specific mechanics reported by the specialist reference; the official Pokémon guidance reviewed confirms more generally that caught Alphas can become strong allies, but does not establish those numerical details.

Alpha encounters can also have species- and location-specific item tables, according to Serebii. Seed of Mastery and Exp. Candy are among the possible rewards it names, but rewards vary; an Alpha does not necessarily drop the same item as another.
Is Alpha hunting worth it?
Try to catch an Alpha if you want a powerful ally or are looking for the reported size, training, and move advantages. The trade-off is a more dangerous and difficult encounter, and chance-based hunting may take time. Start with guaranteed Alpha locations if you want a more predictable target; use the exact odds and spawn details as guide-reported information rather than a promise, since they may depend on the game version.
