There isn’t a reliable, edition-specific ranking of the ten hardest blocks to break in Minecraft: breaking time depends on the edition, tool, enchantments and mining conditions. The strongest candidate among blocks players can encounter and break in ordinary Survival is reinforced deepslate. Mojang says it takes almost a minute and a half to break—and that an enchanted diamond pickaxe does not make it faster.
Why there isn’t a definitive top ten
“Hardest” can mean a block’s hardness stat, the time it takes to break under a particular setup, or practical unbreakability in Survival. Those are different measures. A time comparison needs to specify the edition and version, tool, enchantments and effects; Bedrock destroy-time values have also changed between updates. The available references do not establish a complete, current list of ten blocks with comparable Java and Bedrock breaking times, so a precise top-ten order would be misleading.
The useful distinction is between blocks that are exceptionally slow but can be broken in ordinary Survival and blocks that are effectively unbreakable there or require special mechanics. The first group includes reinforced deepslate, obsidian and crying obsidian. The values below are wiki-listed hardness figures, not a freshly verified set for a specific game build.

These figures are useful for identifying tough candidates, not for converting directly into a universal time ranking. Minecraft’s wiki-listed hardness values come from a source whose crawl is old, and exact destroy times can vary by version and edition.

Why reinforced deepslate stands out
Reinforced deepslate is found in the core of ancient cities. In Mojang’s December 20, 2024 Block of the Month article, author Duncan Geere says it is “one of the hardest blocks in the game” and that holding the use button for “almost a minute and a half” is required to break it. That is Mojang’s practical description, not a controlled timing result for every edition and setup.
Most importantly for players choosing a tool, Mojang says an enchanted diamond pickaxe will not speed up the process. So if you are asking whether you can mine reinforced deepslate with a pickaxe, the answer is that it can be broken, but upgrading to that pickaxe does not make it quicker. The cited breaking reference explains why time comparisons need conditions: the block, held item and mining penalties all matter.

How obsidian and ancient debris compare
Obsidian and crying obsidian
Obsidian is a familiar, difficult-to-break Survival block, and crying obsidian appears above it in the cited wiki hardness list. Both belong among the toughest blocks a Survival player may encounter, but naming an exact time for either without a specified edition, version and mining setup would overstate what the available comparison supports. Ancient debris
Ancient debris has a wiki-listed hardness of 30, below reinforced deepslate and crying obsidian in that list. It is still a tough block, but the figure alone does not establish how long it takes to break with a particular tool or how its time ranks against other blocks in a current build. What counts as “breakable” in Survival?
A ranking changes if it includes blocks players cannot normally break in Survival, or blocks removable only through special mechanics. Those are better described as unbreakable or specially removable than folded into a list of the hardest ordinary mining targets. This article focuses on blocks a player can encounter and break in ordinary Survival, while recognizing that game edition and version affect exact breaking behavior.
For historical context, Mojang’s Minecraft 1.20.30 Bedrock notes document destroy-time and edition-parity changes. That update history is another reason not to treat an unsourced top-ten time list as universal across Java and Bedrock.

How to compare blocks fairly
To make a genuine ranking, compare the same edition and version, then state the tool, enchantments and relevant effects for every block. Also distinguish between the time to break a block and what happens afterward: whether it drops itself, whether a tool changes the result, and whether it is obtainable in ordinary Survival are separate questions. Without those controls, a list of ten names can look precise while mixing unlike measurements.
