R6 and R15 are Roblox avatar rig types: R6 uses six body parts, while R15 supports up to 15. R15 allows more articulated movement and newer avatar features, but it is not automatically the better choice for every player or game. The experience’s settings and scripts determine which rigs it supports.
What do R6 and R15 mean?
The numbers refer to the rig’s body-part count. Roblox describes R6 as its classic six-part avatar technology and R15 as a newer technology that supports up to 15 body parts. The labels identify how a character is built and animated; they are not ratings of how good it looks.
R6 is associated with classic blocky avatars and experiences made for that rig. R15 can be styled in blocky, humanoid, or fantasy forms, so an R15 avatar does not have to look realistic. Roblox’s CTO explained the distinction in an October 2023 overview of avatar technology.
How are R6 and R15 different?
| Comparison | R6 | R15 |
|---|---|---|
| Body structure | Six body parts | Up to 15 body parts |
| Movement and features | Classic rig designed for blocky avatars and experiences built around R6 | More articulated movement; supports newer mobility and expression capabilities |
| Appearance | Associated with the classic blocky style | Can support blocky, humanoid, and fantasy styles |
| Game compatibility | Accepted by experiences configured for R6 | Accepted when the experience supports R15, or through an adapter in some R6 experiences |
Roblox describes R15 as supporting the latest mobility and expression capabilities. That does not mean every R15 avatar uses every feature, or that every game implements them. The experience’s configuration and code matter.

Is R15 better than R6?
It depends on what you value. Choose R6 if you prefer the classic blocky look or want the rig used by an experience designed specifically around R6. R15 is the more flexible option for articulated movement and a broader range of avatar styles and newer features.
Neither is universally better: a game may look or behave differently depending on the rig it was built to support. Also, R15 can be styled to look blocky, so choosing R15 does not require giving up that appearance.

Can an R15 avatar join an R6 game?
Sometimes. Roblox’s R6 to R15 Adapter is a developer-side compatibility feature that can let R15 avatars enter an R6 experience. In that experience, the avatar uses R6-like scale and movement while retaining some R15 components, such as layered accessories and dynamic heads. Roblox describes the adapter as an emulation layer that allows R6 scripts to run on R15 bodies without requiring action from the avatar creator. See the R6 to R15 Adapter documentation.
The adapter is not a guarantee that every R6 game will behave identically with R15 avatars. Roblox identifies developer-side cases that may need testing, including custom avatar editors, rig-specific code, resizing, child lookup and replication, assumptions about head meshes, and head collisions. Players generally cannot fix those compatibility issues themselves; they depend on how the experience is built.

Can you customize an R6 or R15 avatar?
Roblox Studio’s Avatar Settings let creators set global character properties for players joining an experience. Developers can also use character appearance settings and HumanoidDescription to change properties such as accessories, classic clothing, body-part assets, body colors, animations, and scale. Roblox notes that the documented scale settings do not affect R6 body types.

In a 2023 beta announcement, Roblox reported that 98% of users had R15 avatars and that users spent 40% more time on average in R15 experiences than in R6 experiences. Those are figures from that announcement, not current platform-wide statistics; the announcement does not establish whether the same comparisons hold today.
