Mojang introduced the four types as separate variants in its Java Snapshot 20w16a announcement in April 2020, and the names still match the game’s official overview of bastion remnants.
The four bastion remnant types
Mojang’s release notes for Snapshot 20w16a state: “Added 4 separate bastion remnant types: bridge, Hoglin stable, housing units, and treasure room.” Those are the four categories the game’s own documentation uses, so they are the correct answer to the question as asked.
- Bridge: the bridge variant of the bastion remnant.
- Hoglin stable: the variant named for hoglins, one of the mobs the official overview associates with bastions.
- Housing units: the variant built as living quarters.
- Treasure room: the variant centred on a treasure area.
The official sources name these four categories but do not describe the exact layout, chest contents, or spawn chances of each one. Treat the names as the verified part of the answer and check a current version guide before relying on details of any single variant.
Bastion remnant, not Nether Fortress
The word “bastion” has a real-world meaning: a projecting part of a defensive wall. Minecraft’s official article on bastion remnants draws that distinction directly. Duncan Geere, the article’s writer, introduces it with the sentence “A fortress in the Nether, not to be confused with a Nether Fortress.” The bastion remnant is a separate structure from the Nether Fortress, so searches for one should not be mixed up with the other.

What the official overview says about bastions
Minecraft’s official overview, published by Duncan Geere on 15 November 2025, describes bastion remnants as large structures made of blackstone and basalt. Piglins are commonly present. The threats it mentions include piglin brutes and, sometimes, hoglins.
The overview also lists possible loot, including gilded blackstone, Netherite upgrade smithing templates, the snout banner pattern and armor trim, and the Pigstep music disc. It does not give per-type probabilities or guarantee any item from a particular variant, so the loot list describes what a bastion can contain rather than what each type contains.
Where the 4-type answer is established and where it is not
- Established: the four type names, from Mojang’s 2020 snapshot announcement.
- Established: bastions appear in all Nether biomes except basalt deltas, according to the same 2020 announcement. That was a statement about the snapshot; the sources reviewed do not confirm it for every later version.
- Not established: whether each variant has a distinct layout, which loot it contains, or how dangerous it is compared with the others. The sources do not rank the variants by difficulty or safety.
Where to check the current details
For the original list, read Mojang’s Minecraft Snapshot 20w16a announcement. For the current official description of the structure, read the Building Blocks: Bastion remnant article. Because the game changes between updates, confirm the four types against the version you are playing.
