Minecraft has four bastion remnant variants: bridge, Hoglin stable, housing units, and treasure room. They are variants of the same Nether structure—not four separate structure types—and each offers a different structure and loot opportunity.
The four bastion remnant types
| Type | What to know |
|---|---|
| Bridge | Mojang lists this as one of the four variants. Its name identifies the type, but the official overview does not establish one fixed layout or appearance for every bridge bastion. |
| Hoglin stable | A distinct bastion variant whose name points to its association with hoglins. Hoglins may be among the hostile creatures encountered in bastions. |
| Housing units | A separate structure and loot variant. Mojang’s overview does not provide a room-by-room map for it. |
| Treasure room | Mojang characterizes this variant as piled high with gold. A survival guide also notes a magma cube spawner in this type, but does not establish variant-specific loot probabilities. |
Mojang uses these same four names in its Java snapshot announcement and Bedrock 1.16.0 release notes.
Where bastions generate and what they are
Bastion remnants generate in Nether biomes except basalt deltas. They are sizable, multi-storey structures built from materials including blackstone and basalt. A bastion remnant is not a Nether Fortress; those are separate structures.
The four labels describe variations of a bastion remnant. They do not imply that every structure of a given type has an identical layout, chest count, or loot distribution.

Threats and loot to expect
Bastions are guarded by Piglins and piglin brutes, and hoglins may also be present. Piglins can become hostile when a player opens a chest or mines gold, treating those actions as stealing; reaching loot does not make it safe to take.
Mojang’s bastion overview associates these structures with loot such as gilded blackstone, Netherite upgrade smithing templates, the snout banner pattern and armor trim, and the Pigstep music disc. It also mentions iron, Netherite and gold items, crying obsidian, ancient debris, netherite scrap, and cooked porkchops. These are broad bastion loot examples, not a complete variant-by-variant or Java-versus-Bedrock loot table; exact chest odds are not established here.

Use the names as a quick way to distinguish the four broad bastion variants: bridge, Hoglin stable, housing units, and treasure room. The treasure room is the clearest loot cue because Mojang describes it as gold-rich. For the other types, the official overview confirms their names and distinct structure/loot opportunities but does not give enough detail to rank layouts, chest contents, or danger precisely.
