Online features such as multiplayer require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, and the Switch Lite cannot connect to a TV. Which drawbacks matter most depends on how you plan to play—and whether you are comparing an older Switch with the newer Switch 2.
What are the main disadvantages of a Nintendo Switch?
The drawbacks are practical trade-offs, not deal-breakers for every player. The standard Switch and OLED can switch between handheld and TV play, but their storage and handheld resolution are modest by current standards. The Lite is more limited in how it can be played. Online multiplayer also comes with a service requirement, while the system offers fewer non-gaming entertainment options than a general-purpose streaming device.
- Storage: The standard Switch has 32 GB of internal storage, with some reserved for system use.
- Handheld display: The standard model’s built-in screen is a 6.2-inch LCD with a resolution of 1280×720.
- Battery: Nintendo’s approximate battery estimates range from 2.5 to 9 hours depending on model.
- Online play: Nintendo Switch Online membership, a Nintendo Account, and internet access are required for online features; requirements and features vary by game and region.
- Switch Lite: It is handheld-only, and some games need separate compatible controllers or do not support handheld mode.
Does the Switch have enough storage?
For players who mostly buy physical games, the standard Switch’s 32 GB may be workable, although updates and saved data still use system storage. A digital library can fill it quickly. Nintendo supports microSDXC cards up to 2 TB, but the card is sold separately. See Nintendo’s microSD card FAQ for its expansion guidance.
Adding a card is a straightforward way to expand capacity, but it adds an extra purchase and means choosing and managing removable storage. The limitation is more noticeable when compared with Switch 2: Nintendo announced 256 GB of built-in storage for that system, describing it as eight times the storage capacity of Switch models other than OLED.

Is the Switch screen too low-resolution?
The standard Switch’s 6.2-inch screen is a 1280×720 LCD. In handheld or tabletop mode, games display at up to 720p; when docked, the system can output up to 1080p through HDMI. Nintendo lists the standard Switch technical specifications.
That resolution can make fine detail and small text less crisp than on newer, higher-resolution handheld displays. Whether it bothers you depends on the game, your eyesight, and how closely you compare screens. The specification alone does not mean every game looks poor; it sets a limit on the detail the panel can show.

How long does a Nintendo Switch battery last?
Nintendo’s approximate battery estimates vary by model. They are not guarantees: Nintendo says actual duration depends on the software and how the system is used. Check the model number on the console to distinguish the original Switch from the revised version.
| Model | Nintendo’s approximate battery estimate |
|---|---|
| Original Switch (HAC-001) | 2.5–6.5 hours |
| Revised Switch (HAC-001(-01)) | 4.5–9 hours |
| Switch OLED | 4.5–9 hours |
| Switch Lite | 3–7 hours |
These ranges come from Nintendo Support’s battery-duration guidance. A demanding game or use pattern can shorten a portable session, so the original model’s lower estimate should not be applied to every Switch.

Do you have to pay to play online?
Nintendo says online features require a Nintendo Switch Online membership, a Nintendo Account, and an internet connection. The exact online features and requirements vary by game and region; not every offline mode requires a membership. Check the game’s details and Nintendo’s local service terms before buying if online multiplayer is important to you. Membership prices and terms can differ by country and change over time.
What limitations does Switch Lite have?
Switch Lite is designed for handheld play, not TV play. It does not provide the standard and OLED models’ docked-TV option or detachable Joy-Con controllers. That makes it a less flexible fit if you want to play on a television or pass controllers around for local multiplayer.

Game compatibility also depends on handheld-mode support. Some games may require separate compatible controllers, and some do not support handheld mode. Yes, compared with a general-purpose streaming device, the Switch is focused on gaming. Nintendo describes the Switch family as “first and foremost a dedicated video game platform.” Its US FAQ lists Hulu and YouTube as available apps, so it would be inaccurate to say the console has no streaming apps. App availability is limited compared with devices built primarily for streaming, and the apps available may depend on region. See Nintendo’s Switch support and FAQ.

How does Switch 2 change the comparison?
Nintendo announced Switch 2 for June 5, 2025. Its 256 GB of built-in storage—eight times the capacity of Switch models other than OLED—makes the standard Switch’s 32 GB look especially constrained. Switch 2 also has a higher-resolution display, so buyers comparing handheld image detail should consider that difference.
Nintendo says compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games can be played on Switch 2. Compatibility is not a promise that every original Switch game or accessory works identically, so check Nintendo’s compatibility information for a specific title or accessory before relying on it. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 overview.
Quick Recap
Which Switch drawbacks matter most for you?
- Choose with storage in mind if you buy digital games: the standard model may need a separately purchased microSDXC card as your library grows.
- Compare screens in person if possible if handheld sharpness or small text is important to you; resolution is a spec, but how noticeable it feels is personal.
- Check the model-specific battery estimate if you often play away from an outlet, and remember that software and use affect real duration.
- Confirm the game’s modes before buying a Lite if you want access to a particular title, TV play, or local multiplayer with detachable controllers.
- Check online requirements for the exact game and region if multiplayer is a priority.
- Compare with Switch 2 if newer hardware, more built-in storage, or a higher-resolution display matters more than playing on the original system itself.
