Call of Duty is not established by the available official sources as one fully mapped campaign continuity. The clearest connections are a documented Black Ops story thread and a direct sequel link between Modern Warfare II (2022) and Modern Warfare III (2023). Zombies also has distinct story strands, so a connection in one mode does not automatically make every Call of Duty campaign part of the same timeline.
Which Call of Duty games are explicitly connected?
The strongest continuity claims come from official descriptions of sequels. These support specific links, not a complete map of every game, mode, and ending.

The Black Ops campaign thread
- Call of Duty: Black Ops → Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Treyarch describes Cold War as a direct sequel to the original Black Ops. Alex Mason, Frank Woods, and Jason Hudson return. Treyarch’s Black Ops Cold War announcement.
- Black Ops Cold War → Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. The Black Ops 6 announcement says its campaign follows the events of Cold War. Its early-1990s setting is directly connected to the 1980s flashbacks in Black Ops 2, and Frank Woods returns. Activision’s Black Ops 6 announcement.
- Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 6 → Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. The reveal places Black Ops 7 in 2035, after the events of both games. David Mason and Raul Menendez return, and the developers describe the story as reconnecting earlier characters and storylines. Activision’s Black Ops 7 reveal.
That makes Black Ops, Cold War, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7 the clearest supported path. Black Ops 2 is important context because Black Ops 6 refers to its flashbacks and Black Ops 7 follows its events. Treyarch’s catalog includes Black Ops 2, 3, and 4 under the Black Ops name, but catalog placement alone does not establish every campaign’s precise continuity or how its endings fit. Treyarch’s Black Ops catalog.
The newer Modern Warfare sequel link
Activision calls Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023) a direct sequel to Modern Warfare II (2022). This establishes that specific sequel relationship; it does not, by itself, document every connection among the rebooted games or the original Modern Warfare trilogy (2007–2011). Where does Zombies fit?
Zombies has its own narrative strands, and its continuity should not be treated as interchangeable with a game’s campaign. Treyarch Zombies director Jason Blundell explained that Black Ops 4 continued the Aether story while introducing a new Chaos story. In that game, IX and Voyage of Despair belonged to Chaos; Blood of the Dead and Classified belonged to Aether. Blundell described the decision this way: “At the beginning of Black Ops 4, we decided that we’d reached that fork in the road where we had enough great ideas sitting in the bucket so that we could tell a new story.” Activision’s interview with Jason Blundell.
Modern Warfare III introduced Zombies into the Modern Warfare universe for the first time, and Activision described its mode as a new Treyarch Zombies story. That is a specific crossover point; it does not establish that every earlier Zombies storyline shares one continuous narrative. Activision’s Modern Warfare III announcement.

Are Black Ops and Modern Warfare in the same timeline?
The official material cited here does not settle that broader question. It confirms the specific Black Ops sequel links above and the Modern Warfare II–Modern Warfare III sequel link, but it does not provide a comprehensive canon chart connecting the rebooted Modern Warfare games, the original trilogy, Black Ops, and every Zombies storyline. Shared characters, references, or a game’s place in a franchise catalog are not enough on their own to prove that all campaigns form one seamless continuity.

For the clearest documented Black Ops path
- Call of Duty: Black Ops
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 7
Play Black Ops 2 as additional context before Black Ops 7, or before Black Ops 6 if you want the background to its 1980s flashbacks. This is a path through the explicit links, not a definitive order for every Black Ops game.

For the newer Modern Warfare link
