Fences and open trapdoors commonly block ordinary ground mobs, while rails can deter some mobs from choosing a route. None is a universal perimeter: flying, teleporting, ranged, or differently behaving mobs can bypass or attack across barriers. Choose a setup for the specific mob, edition, and version.
Which blocks stop ordinary ground mobs?
Fences
The Minecraft Wiki’s Tips and tricks tutorial describes ordinary mobs as unable to pass over fences without jump boost. A fence is therefore a practical ground-level barrier, but it does not protect against flying mobs that can go over it.
Open trapdoors
The same tutorial says mobs cannot jump over open trapdoors. This can make an open-trapdoor arrangement useful for stopping common ground movement, but it is not a guarantee for every entity or game version. Check the target mob and make sure the arrangement leaves no route around it.
Walls and gaps
A solid wall is a direct physical obstacle, but it only works if the mob cannot exploit an opening, break a door, fly over it, or teleport past it. The Defense tutorial emphasizes that mob-specific behavior affects how defenses perform; a structure that blocks one mob may not contain another.

Are rails a barrier?
Rails are better understood as a pathfinding deterrent than as an impassable block. The Tips and tricks tutorial says mobs avoid walking on rails, but notes that creepers can still explode across them, skeletons can shoot across them, and endermen can teleport into the protected area. A rail strip may influence a route, but it is not a complete perimeter.
Why does the mob matter?
Barriers interact with different movement and attack behaviors. Before building, consider whether the target walks, flies, teleports, or attacks from a distance, and whether the structure blocks movement physically or merely makes a route less attractive.

- Flying mobs: A ground-level fence or gap may be bypassed from above.
- Teleporting mobs: A barrier may not prevent entry if the mob can teleport past it.
- Ranged attackers: A barrier that blocks movement may still leave a line of attack over or through it.
- Door-breaking or gap-finding mobs: Check the whole construction, not just its main barrier.
Edition and version also matter. The official Bedrock Creator reference for minecraft:navigation.walk documents navigation options for avoiding selected blocks and damage blocks, illustrating that pathfinding can depend on how an entity is configured. It is not a universal list of player-buildable barriers.
What about honey blocks and short barriers?
Old pathfinding reports should not be treated as current rules for every version. Mojang’s Java issue MC-163022 records a honey-block avoidance bug in snapshot 19w41a and a fix in 19w42a. The legacy Bedrock report MCPE-47075 records a short-block pathfinding issue fixed in version 1.16.100. These records establish historical, version-specific behavior—not an exhaustive current comparison between Java and Bedrock.

How to keep a particular mob out
- Identify the target: Note the mob’s edition-specific behavior, including whether it walks, flies, teleports, breaks doors, or attacks at range.
- Choose the kind of defense: For ordinary ground movement, consider a fence or open-trapdoor arrangement. Use rails only when a pathfinding deterrent is sufficient; use a continuous physical wall when movement must be blocked.
- Inspect for bypasses: Look for gaps, doors the mob can break, a route over the top, teleportation, or an unobstructed attack path.
- Check the game version: Do not assume a historical pathfinding report describes the current behavior in your edition.
The Defense tutorial also describes a concealed pathfinding trap made with carpet over string above a sufficiently deep damaging fall. That is a constructed trap, not a general-purpose block barrier; it depends on the setup and the mob’s pathfinding.
