In No Man’s Sky, a Sentinel Pillar is a guarded control post for local Sentinel forces. Its main terminal can temporarily shut down a planet’s Sentinels, open an archive of Sentinel lore, and may occasionally offer a Royal Multi-Tool. You can locate a Pillar with a Sentinel Boundary Map or by defeating a level-five Sentinel alert.
What a Sentinel Pillar does
Hello Games describes the Pillar as a “highly-guarded control post for local Sentinel forces.” Its main terminal has three notable uses:
- Shut down Sentinels: Interacting with the terminal can temporarily suppress the planet’s Sentinels.
- Read the archive: The terminal contains stories about Sentinel history and its connections with Travellers, the Atlas, and the wider universe. Reading the full archive unlocks a player title.
- Harvest weapons technology: A Royal Multi-Tool may occasionally be available, but it is not a guaranteed reward.

How to find a Sentinel Pillar
Hello Games documents two ways to locate one:
Use a Sentinel Boundary Map
A Sentinel Boundary Map is a special chart harvested from defeated Sentinels. Use the chart to locate a Pillar.

Defeat a level-five Sentinel alert
Alternatively, fight through the escalating Sentinel encounter until you defeat the level-five alert. This locates the nearest Pillar.
The update presents these as different approaches—a chart-based route and a route earned through a high-alert fight—but does not compare how long they take or how reliably they find a Pillar.

What happens when you shut down the Sentinels?
The terminal shutdown is temporary, not permanent. Hello Games also presents it as an alternative to defeating the final wave of a maximum-alert Sentinel battle. The February 2022 update does not specify how long either shutdown lasts, so there is no supported exact timer to rely on.
