An indulgence chest is a church donation box in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. Henry pays the amount shown on the chest in groschen, and the payment is meant to improve his reputation in the surrounding area and with church-linked characters. Nothing goes into his inventory, and paying does not guarantee a reset to full standing.
How the donation works
Gamepressure’s mechanic guide describes the donation as a way to improve reputation in the surrounding area. Gamer Guides adds that it can also improve standing with the church and its associated NPCs. Destructoid’s explanation confirms that the amount is not fixed and changes with Henry’s reputation. The chest is therefore a money-for-standing option that works alongside the rest of the reputation system, not a separate progress track.

Why the price changes
The cost is displayed at the chest when you interact with it, so the number you see is the number you pay. Gamepressure notes that a player with many transgressions may be asked for an amount described as “over thousands of groschen” (Gamepressure, guide updated 11 February 2025). The guides do not publish a price table or formula, so there is no reliable way to predict the figure before you reach the chest.
What a payment does not do
Paying is not a universal cure for serious reputation damage. Gamepressure cautions that forgiveness is not always enough and that good deeds may also be needed to recover fully. Destructoid states that a donation does not automatically bring reputation up to 100. Treat the chest as one recovery step, then check the result.

Checking the result after you pay
Reputation is tracked by group and by settlement, so a payment may help one area more than another. To check the effect:
- Note your current standing before you donate. Open the pause menu and go to Player, then Reputation, as described in Destructoid’s explanation.
- Read the groups and settlements that matter for the area where you are, such as the local village or town.
- Donate at the chest, then reopen the same Reputation screen and compare the values with your notes.
- If the local value is still too low for the quest or dialogue you need, complete positive actions in that settlement and check again.
Menu labels can change between builds, so if the path above does not match your screen, look for the reputation entry under the player section of the menu.

The reputation bug and Patch 1.4
Some early reports said an indulgence box could lower reputation instead of raising it. Deep Silver’s official Patch 1.4 notes, under the “Reputation” heading, include the line “Fixed indulgence box lowering player’s reputation.” That confirms the fix for this specific bug. The notes do not explain the reputation formula, and no source guarantees that every later reported change is impossible.
If you see a reputation drop after donating, record the game version and the before and after values for the affected group or settlement. That information is far more useful than assuming the old behaviour is still present.

Where indulgence chests are found
Gamepressure’s guide maps indulgence chests in Trosky and Kuttenberg, and Gamer Guides lists nine map locations. Use those guides to find the exact chest positions, since the sources do not give coordinates in text form.

The two main recovery routes differ mainly in cost and in how directly they address local standing. The table below uses only what the published guides state.
| Recovery route | Immediate money cost | Time and travel | Effect on standing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indulgence chest | Amount shown at the chest; described as “over thousands of groschen” for many transgressions (Gamepressure, 2025) | Requires reaching a chest in a mapped location; time required not stated | Improves reputation in the surrounding area and with church-linked characters; not a guaranteed full reset |
| Good deeds | None stated in the guides | Not stated in the guides | Gamepressure says they may be needed for severe damage; size of effect not stated |
Version and date limits
The mechanic guides date from early 2025 and predate any later patches, so their wording on costs and locations may not match the current build. Patch 1.4 is the official reference for the reputation bug. For anything else, compare the displayed cost and your reputation screen on your own version of the game.
