In Gran Turismo 7 (GT7), MR means mid-engine, rear-wheel drive. The engine sits between the front and rear axles, commonly just behind the cabin, and sends power to the rear wheels.
What the MR layout means
MR describes two things: where the engine is placed and which wheels receive power. In GT7’s drivetrain reference, the engine is positioned between the axles, often directly behind the passenger compartment, while the rear wheels are driven. How MR differs from RR
MR and RR both send power to the rear wheels, but the engine sits in a different place. The official Gran Turismo 6 manual spells out MR as “Mid-Engine/Rear-Wheel Drive” and distinguishes it from RR, where the engine is farther back, behind the rear wheels. That manual corroborates the abbreviation; GT7’s reference is the source for the GT7-specific layout description.

What MR suggests about handling
GT7’s reference says placing the heavy engine closer to the car’s center can reduce yaw inertia and contribute to sharp cornering behavior. This is a general characteristic of the layout, not a promise that every MR car will handle the same way or be faster than another drivetrain type. The cited references describe the layouts qualitatively; they do not establish a universal lap-time advantage or a controlled performance comparison.

When MR appears in a car’s name
MR can also appear as part of a vehicle’s model name rather than as a drivetrain code. For example, GT7’s official April 23, 2026 update 1.69 notice lists the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX MR GSR ’06. The notice does not explain that model-name suffix, so the drivetrain expansion should not be assumed to define it.
