In Minecraft, “fireproof” usually means non-flammable: the block itself will not burn away. Obsidian is a straightforward example. Netherrack is also non-flammable, but fire placed on top of it burns indefinitely, so a block that does not burn is not necessarily a block that puts fire out.
What “fireproof” means in Minecraft
For building purposes, distinguish two behaviors: whether the block itself burns away, and whether fire placed on it continues to burn. Microsoft’s Bedrock Block Wizard documentation describes its custom-block setting this way: “Flammable: When enabled, the block can catch fire and burn.” The page was last updated May 6, 2025; this defines a setting for custom blocks, not a complete list of vanilla blocks.
The Minecraft Wiki’s fire reference explains that fire can spread to and burn away flammable blocks. Non-flammable blocks do not burn away, though fire can be lit on some of them and usually goes out quickly.
Examples of blocks that do not burn away
Obsidian
Obsidian is listed as non-flammable and does not catch fire from lava, making it a clear example of a block that will not burn away. Its block reference also identifies it as a material used for Nether portal frames.

Netherrack
Netherrack does not burn away, but fire lit on its top surface burns indefinitely. That makes it useful when you want a lasting fire, but it is not a block that extinguishes fire placed on it. The Netherrack reference describes this behavior.
Magma blocks and other non-flammable blocks
The fire reference notes that magma blocks, like netherrack, are exceptions to the usual quick-extinguishing behavior of fire on non-flammable blocks. The available references do not establish a complete, current block-by-block list, so these examples should not be treated as an exhaustive catalogue for every edition or version.

Fire resistance is not explosion resistance
A block’s flammability does not determine how it behaves in an explosion. Microsoft’s Block Wizard documentation presents flammability and explosion resistance as separate custom-block properties. Check the property relevant to your build rather than assuming that a block safe from fire is also blast-resistant.
