The PlayStation 5’s main strengths are its choice of disc or digital consoles, access to PS5 and backward-compatible PS4 disc games on the standard model, and optional PS5 Pro enhancements for select games. The trade-offs are model-specific storage and disc access, a higher US recommended price for the Pro, and enhancements that vary by game. Which PS5 is right for you depends on how you buy games, which titles you play, and the price in your region.

Which PS5 console is right for you?
Sony’s US buying page lists three configurations. Storage figures below are the capacities Sony lists for each console; they do not establish how much space is available for installed games after system software. Price figures are US recommended prices effective April 2, 2026, not guaranteed retailer prices or prices in other countries.
| Console | Listed storage | Disc access | US recommended price | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 console | 1TB | Built-in Blu-ray disc drive | $649.99 | Players who want physical games, including PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray games, as well as digital downloads. |
| PS5 Digital Edition | 825GB | No built-in disc drive; digital downloads | $599.99 | Players who are comfortable buying and playing games digitally. |
| PS5 Pro | 2TB | Disc drive is not built in; a compatible removable drive is an option | $899.99 | Players who value a larger listed capacity and play titles with PS5 Pro enhancements. |
Sony announced these US recommended prices on March 27, 2026, with the changes taking effect April 2, 2026. Local taxes, retailer pricing, stock and regional prices can differ. Sony’s price announcement is the dated reference for those figures; Sony’s US console buying page lists the configurations and features.
Pros of buying a PlayStation 5
You can choose physical or digital game buying
The standard PS5 includes a Blu-ray disc drive for PS5 and PS4 disc games, while the Digital Edition is designed for digital downloads. A disc drive can be useful if you already own compatible games on disc or want the option to buy physical copies. The digital model avoids having a built-in drive, but it also means choosing digital versions of games unless you add a compatible removable drive.

PS5 Pro offers more listed storage and selected game enhancements
Sony lists 2TB for PS5 Pro, compared with 1TB for the standard PS5 and 825GB for the Digital Edition. Sony also says enhanced features are available only in select PS5 Pro enhanced games and vary by title. The potential visual benefit is therefore game-dependent, not a blanket upgrade to every PS5 game. Check whether the games you care about are specifically enhanced before treating the Pro’s premium as worthwhile.
There are official expansion and setup options
Sony lists extra storage and a removable disc drive among its accessory options. These give some owners a route to expand storage or add disc access, but compatibility matters: the removable drive is intended for PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000/CFI-2100 slim model groups and PS5 Pro, and internet connectivity is required to pair it during setup. Sony’s PS5 accessories page lists accessory categories. The vertical stand is sold separately, with compatibility varying by model.

Cons and limitations to consider
Disc access and storage differ by model
The Digital Edition lacks a built-in disc drive, and its listed 825GB capacity is lower than the standard PS5’s 1TB and PS5 Pro’s 2TB. If physical games matter to you, factor in the compatible drive’s separate purchase and setup requirements rather than assuming any PS5 can use any disc drive.
The PS5 Pro premium does not benefit every player equally
At Sony’s US recommended prices effective April 2, 2026, PS5 Pro is $250 more than the standard PS5 and $300 more than the Digital Edition. That price gap may make sense to a player who values its larger listed capacity and plays enhanced titles; it is harder to justify on the basis of game enhancements alone if the games they play are not among those supported. Prices may vary by retailer and country.

“Up to 8K” is not a typical gameplay promise
Sony’s compatibility guide says select PS5 Pro games can support up to 8K, while system and media apps support up to 4K. “Up to” describes a supported maximum capability, not a promise that every game runs at 8K. The guide also notes that PS5 Pro enhanced features are limited to select games and vary by title. See Sony’s PS5 Pro compatibility guide for the scope of those claims.

How to decide
- Start with how you buy games. If you want to use Blu-ray game discs, choose a model with a built-in drive or confirm that your exact Digital Edition model group supports Sony’s removable drive.
- Compare the listed storage you need. Sony lists 825GB for Digital Edition, 1TB for PS5 and 2TB for PS5 Pro. Consider whether your game library may make extra storage useful; the listed capacity is not a statement of free space available after system software.
- Check your games against PS5 Pro support. Sony says enhancements apply only to select games and vary by title, so look up support for games you actually play rather than assuming a universal improvement.
- Compare current local prices. The US recommended prices effective April 2, 2026 provide a dated point of reference, but retailer offers and prices outside the US can differ. Include any compatible removable drive or separately sold stand you intend to buy in your budget.
