Being a gamer is not a health condition. The concern is a persistent pattern in which someone cannot control gaming, gives it priority over daily life, and keeps playing despite harm. For gaming disorder, the World Health Organization (WHO) also requires significant impairment in an important area of life; playing for many hours, by itself, does not establish the disorder.
What signs can mean gaming has become harmful?
The WHO defines gaming disorder as a pattern involving three features: impaired control over gaming, gaming taking precedence over other interests and daily activities, and continuing or escalating play despite negative consequences. The pattern must cause significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational, or another important area of functioning. It would normally have been evident for at least 12 months. WHO’s gaming disorder Q&A explains this ICD-11 definition.
- Reduced control: A person repeatedly plays longer or more often than intended, or cannot cut back despite trying.
- Gaming takes priority: Play crowds out responsibilities, relationships, sleep, or other interests and daily activities.
- Play continues despite harm: The person keeps gaming or increases play even as problems become apparent.
- Meaningful impairment: The pattern substantially affects an important part of life, rather than simply attracting disapproval from others.
Enthusiasm, skill, frequent play, or belonging to a gaming community is not a symptom on its own. The relevant question is whether control and functioning have been seriously affected.
Does the number of hours played determine whether someone has a problem?
No single number of hours establishes gaming disorder. WHO advises paying attention to time spent when gaming excludes daily activities, and to changes in physical or psychological health and social functioning. The impact and pattern matter more than an isolated total.

For example, a long gaming session does not by itself show a disorder if the person remains able to manage responsibilities and stop when needed. By contrast, repeated failed attempts to limit play, missed obligations, or continuing despite clear harm are reasons to take the situation seriously.
How do WHO and APA descriptions differ?
The WHO recognizes gaming disorder in ICD-11. The American Psychiatric Association (APA), by contrast, lists Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) in DSM-5-TR as a condition for further study, not as a settled diagnosis in the manual’s main diagnostic section. These frameworks are related but not interchangeable.

The APA’s proposed symptoms include preoccupation with gaming; sadness, anxiety, or irritability when gaming is unavailable; needing more time to feel satisfied; unsuccessful efforts to cut back; loss of interest in previous activities; continuing despite problems; deceiving others about time spent; gaming to relieve negative moods; and jeopardizing or losing a job or relationship. The APA’s Internet Gaming page describes this proposed framework. Its symptom list should not be treated as the WHO’s ICD-11 definition.
What other health effects might be associated with gaming?
WHO identifies possible health concerns associated with gaming behavior, including insufficient physical activity, unhealthy diet, eyesight or hearing problems, musculoskeletal problems, sleep deprivation, aggressive behavior, and depression. These are possible associated concerns, not a diagnostic checklist: none by itself proves that someone has gaming disorder. What should someone do if gaming is causing problems?
Look at concrete effects rather than trying to diagnose yourself from hours played or one symptom. Consider whether the person has repeatedly failed to control gaming, neglected daily responsibilities or relationships, continued despite harm, or experienced noticeable effects on sleep, health, school, or work.
If persistent preoccupation with gaming is affecting someone’s life, they can discuss it with a health care provider or mental health professional. The APA recommends seeking professional help when concerned about symptoms and problems related to Internet Gaming Disorder. APA guidance on Internet Gaming provides further information.

How common is gaming disorder?
WHO says gaming disorder affects only a small proportion of people who play digital or video games, but the cited Q&A does not give a precise prevalence figure. Estimates vary, and figures for “problem gaming” may be proxy measures rather than counts of diagnosed gaming disorder. They should not be presented as the prevalence of the disorder.
