To upgrade your axe in Stardew Valley, bring it to Clint at the Blacksmith with the required gold and five bars of the matching metal. Upgrades must be completed in order, and Clint keeps the axe for two in-game days.
What each axe upgrade costs and unlocks
| Upgrade | Gold fee | Bars required | Main milestone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copper | 2,000g | 5 Copper Bars | Chops Large Stumps |
| Steel | 5,000g | 5 Iron Bars | Chops Large Logs, including the log blocking the Secret Woods entrance |
| Gold | 10,000g | 5 Gold Bars | Chops faster |
| Iridium | 25,000g | 5 Iridium Bars | Fastest standard axe tier |
These costs and milestones are listed in the Stardew Valley Wiki’s axe reference.

How to upgrade the axe
- Gather the gold and five bars for the next tier. For example, the Copper upgrade needs 2,000g and five Copper Bars.
- Take your current axe to Clint at the Blacksmith and request the upgrade. The Blacksmith’s services and tool-upgrade process are described in the Blacksmith reference.
- Wait two in-game days, then return to the Blacksmith to collect the finished axe. The Tools reference also lists the upgrade timing.
Can you skip an axe upgrade tier?
No. Upgrade the axe one tier at a time: Copper before Steel, Steel before Gold, and Gold before Iridium. Plan for the next tier from the axe you currently have; you cannot hand in a basic axe and pay directly for Steel or a higher upgrade.
Which upgrade should you get first?
Choose Copper for Large Stumps
A Copper Axe can chop Large Stumps, making it the first upgrade to consider if clearing those is your immediate goal.

Choose Steel for Large Logs and the Secret Woods
A Steel Axe can chop Large Logs, including the log that blocks the Secret Woods entrance. If that entrance is your target, Steel is the relevant milestone; reaching it requires completing the Copper upgrade first.
Choose Gold or Iridium for faster chopping
Gold improves chopping speed, while Iridium is the fastest standard axe tier. Their listed milestones are about speed rather than access to the Large Stumps or Large Logs opened by earlier upgrades.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan around the two-day wait
Clint works on the axe for two in-game days, so you will not have it available for chopping during that period. Pick a window when you can manage without it. Other Blacksmith services remain available while the tool is being upgraded, according to the Blacksmith reference.
Check the in-game calendar before handing it in if a festival falls near the pickup day. If the Blacksmith is closed when the axe is ready, you may have to wait until the shop reopens to collect it.
