In gaming-cheat terminology, ESP stands for Extra Sensory Perception. It refers to software that reveals information players would not normally see—especially opponents’ positions—giving the user an unfair information advantage. PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS’ Anti-Cheat Team uses the term for software that automatically pinpoints other players in a match.
What an ESP cheat does
ESP supplies information about the game world, such as where other players are, and presents it to the user as visual or text-based cues. That can expose an opponent who is outside the player’s normal view, undermining stealth and the importance of sightlines in a shooter.
In its March 25, 2024 developer letter, PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS’ Anti-Cheat Team described ESP as “an illegal software that automatically pinpoints other players’ positions in-game.” The definition and examples in that letter concern PUBG; terminology can vary across games and cheating communities.
How ESP differs from aimbots and wallhacks
- ESP: reveals information, such as opponents’ locations. PUBG’s description does not define it as an aiming feature.
- Aimbot: refers to aim manipulation, a different kind of advantage.
- Wallhack: a related informal term often used when concealed information—such as an opponent behind an obstruction—is made visible. The label is not an exact synonym for ESP in every game.
How PUBG says it counters ESP
PUBG describes its Anti-ESP system as withholding location details for players who are out of sight, so that information is unavailable to ESP software. The developer compared the approach to “Fog of War” in strategy simulation games. The system went live on PUBG servers in September 2023, followed by further security enhancements in December 2023 and January and March 2024.

PUBG’s March 2024 letter reported the following changes in cheaters’ in-game performance:

These are figures reported by PUBG for its own game and countermeasure, not independent measurements or estimates of cheating prevalence across games.
