Beyond that, “only obtainable by commands” is a loose label that mixes three different conditions, and the answer changes with the edition, the version and the world settings. The sections below separate those conditions, name the blocks people usually list, and show how to check a specific block in your own game.
Three different things “only obtainable by commands” can mean
Most lists of command-only blocks blur three separate conditions. Before trusting any list, work out which one it is using.
- Command-obtained: the item can only be given to a player, or the block only placed, through a command such as
/giveor/setblock. - Missing from the Creative inventory: the block exists in the game but has no slot in the Creative menu. Players may still be able to get it by other means, depending on edition.
- Not collectible in Survival: the block may be placeable or pick-blockable in Creative, but cannot be mined or gathered in ordinary Survival play. This is not the same as requiring a command.
Internal or world-state blocks, such as portal blocks, form a fourth category. They can be created by game mechanics or by commands, but that does not mean an ordinary inventory item exists for them. Placing a block with /setblock does not prove that the block can be obtained as an item.
Command blocks: the one documented command-only case
Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock Edition documentation states: “Command blocks can only be obtained by running a command.” Its example is /give @p command_block. The same documentation describes the tutorial world as needing cheats enabled, so this route is limited to worlds where cheats are on.

Impulse, chain and repeating command blocks
Microsoft Learn lists three command block types as separate identifiers in its Bedrock block enum. Their behaviour differs in the way they are triggered:
| Type | How it activates | Behaviour |
|---|---|---|
| Impulse command block | A redstone signal | Runs its command once per activation. |
| Chain command block | When a command block pointing into it is activated | Runs its command as part of a chain. |
| Repeating command block | While powered | Runs once per in-game tick. The tutorial states 20 ticks per second. |
Blocks often listed as command-only
These blocks appear on many “command-only” lists. Their status depends on edition and settings, so treat each entry as a starting point rather than a verdict.
Barrier blocks
Barrier blocks are included in common command-obtained lists and appear in Bedrock’s block enum. The Minecraft Wiki’s Creative-mode reference notes that inventory and pick-block behaviour varies by edition and settings, so whether a barrier is reachable without a command depends on the version you play.
Structure blocks
Structure blocks appear in the Bedrock enum. Microsoft Learn’s build tutorial uses /give @s command_block as part of its setup, but the tutorial does not show that structure blocks are absent from every Creative inventory. Do not infer command-only status from the enum alone.

Jigsaw blocks
Jigsaw blocks are in the Bedrock enum and appear in the Minecraft Wiki’s discussion of blocks omitted from the Creative inventory. That discussion includes edition and settings caveats, so jigsaw availability should be checked against the edition you play.
Structure voids and light blocks
Structure voids and light blocks are often grouped with special or inventory-omitted blocks. The available evidence does not establish one availability rule across all current platforms. The enum includes light-block identifiers, and the Creative reference flags edition-specific differences.
Border and education-specific blocks
Bedrock’s block enum includes border_block. Its availability depends on the edition and on whether the block is exposed in the Creative menu or through commands, so it should not be listed as a general command-only block without naming the edition.
Edition example: chalkboards in Minecraft Education and Bedrock
Chalkboards show why a single list is risky. According to the Minecraft Wiki, Minecraft Education players can get chalkboards from the Creative inventory or with /give. The same entry says Bedrock Edition cannot obtain them through either route, and that reaching them would require glitches or inventory editing tools. Treat this as an example of edition differences rather than a guarantee for every version, since the Wiki warns that its inventory details may lag behind game updates.

Technical blocks and /setblock
A block placed with /setblock exists in the world, but that is not evidence that it can be collected. Portal blocks and similar internal blocks are a clear example. When writing or reading a command-only list, separate “can be placed by a command” from “can be given as an item,” and check each claim on its own.
How to check a specific block in your own game
- Confirm your edition and game version. Bedrock, Java and Education can differ, and the Microsoft Learn command-block rule applies to Bedrock.
- Create a test world and enable cheats.
- Run
/give @pfollowed by the block identifier. If the item appears in your inventory, the block can be given by command in that version. - Look for the block in the Creative inventory separately. A block that appears there is not command-only, even if it can also be given.
- Test Survival collection separately. Being unable to mine a block in Survival does not show that it requires a command.
Java Edition’s inventory and command rules are not covered by the Microsoft Learn Bedrock documentation used for the command-block claim, so a Java list should be checked against Java-specific references before you rely on it.
Source note: the Microsoft Learn Bedrock documentation is the most direct reference for command-block acquisition and identifiers. Minecraft Wiki entries are community-maintained and useful for Creative inventory details, but they can lag behind updates.
