On PC, repair the game in the EA app; if the freeze began after an update and you use mods, test with mods disabled before changing saves or reinstalling. The right next step depends on whether you play on PC or Mac, PlayStation, or Xbox.
Start with basic checks
Before changing game files, close other apps and restart The Sims 4. A background task can interfere with a game, so EA recommends a clean boot on PC when you suspect another program is involved. A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs; follow EA’s current instructions for your Windows version.

Repair the game on PC
- Open the EA app and go to Library.
- Select The Sims 4’s Manage icon.
- Choose Repair, then launch the game and see whether the freeze returns.
EA also recommends limiting the frame rate or enabling V-Sync in the game settings or graphics-card options. These settings may help if freezing is related to performance, but they are not a guaranteed fix. See EA’s Sims 4 troubleshooting steps for current instructions.
Use console-specific checks
Console menus and save handling differ, so do not use PC file-folder instructions on PlayStation or Xbox. EA’s general console guidance includes checking for system updates, unplugging USB devices, restarting or power-cycling, and reinstalling the game. It also recommends restoring the game’s license on PlayStation; on Xbox, its steps include clearing the alternate MAC address and deleting local saved data. Before deleting local data or changing storage, read the current instructions for your console and confirm how your saves are handled.

- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
If The Sims 4 is installed on an external Xbox drive and other steps have not helped, EA suggests trying the internal drive. This is a conditional troubleshooting step, not a reason to buy storage. See EA’s platform troubleshooting guidance.
If freezing began after an update, test without mods
This applies to PC and Mac players who use mods or custom content. Move or disable the Mods folder, launch the game, and test the same situation that normally causes the freeze. Exit without saving while mods and custom content are disabled; otherwise, content used in a save may be removed from it. EA says mods are not screened or endorsed by EA or Maxis, and an update can make a previously trouble-free mod cause issues. Check the creator’s compatibility notes, then update or remove mods that are not compatible with your game version. Read EA’s guidance on mods, updates, and error codes.

Find a specific problem mod
- Move the mods out of the game’s Mods folder and test the game.
- Add them back in small batches, testing after each batch.
- If freezing returns, split that batch into smaller groups and test again until you identify the likely culprit.
EA suggests testing gameplay-changing mods before custom content because gameplay mods are more likely to cause issues. A large number of mods can also add memory and CPU demands, but that alone does not establish that your computer needs a hardware upgrade.
PlayStation and Xbox versions of The Sims 4 do not support mods or custom content, according to EA’s console FAQ; do not look for a PC-style Mods folder on those platforms.

Test a clean user folder without risking your saves
If basic checks and mod testing do not resolve the problem—or you want to find out whether a save or another user file is involved—reset the Sims 4 user folder as a test. First make a copy of the entire The Sims 4 folder in Documents/Electronic Arts. Do not delete saves or empty the recycle bin before you have a backup.
- Quit the game and copy the Sims 4 folder in Documents/Electronic Arts to a safe location.
- Follow EA’s Windows or Mac reset instructions to move or rename the existing folder, then start the game. It will create a clean user folder without your previous saves and mods.
- Test the game. If it runs normally, restore folders or save files from your backup one at a time, testing after each addition.
- If freezing returns after adding a particular file, that file is a likely contributor. Keep the backup so you can restore your original data if needed.
This is a way to narrow down the cause, not a guaranteed repair. Use the operating-system-specific steps in EA’s instructions for backing up and resetting The Sims 4.

Check hardware only after identifying a reason
A freeze by itself does not show that your computer needs more RAM, a new drive, or better cooling. Compare your actual PC with EA’s current system requirements before considering hardware changes. EA’s Sims 4 FAQ lists 8 GB of RAM and 50 GB of free hard-drive space among its recommended PC requirements; those are requirements, not proof that falling short caused a specific freeze. If the game still freezes after the checks for your platform and a clean-folder test, contact EA or follow your console maker’s current support instructions. Include your platform, game version, when the freeze happens, and any recent change such as a game update, new mod, or move to external storage. EA’s Sims 4 support hub links to current troubleshooting resources and a report-a-bug route.
