In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, muscle makes CJ look more muscular and increases the damage he deals with hand-to-hand attacks. It is useful for melee fights and character customization, but it does not make his weapons more powerful.
What muscle changes
- Hand-to-hand damage: Rockstar says, “Hand-to-hand attacks do more damage when you’re ripped.” More muscle can help in close-quarters fights, including fights with gym instructors. Rockstar’s GTA: San Andreas tips specifically recommend maxing muscle if you are having difficulty defeating those instructors.
- Appearance: Muscle changes CJ’s physique, making him look more muscular.
These effects apply to unarmed, hand-to-hand attacks; the cited guidance does not say muscle increases firearm or other weapon damage.
How to build muscle
Train at a gym using body-sculpting exercises, including bench work. Rockstar recommends dividing your available workout time between stamina training and body sculpting rather than spending it all on one. Gym training is limited each in-game day; Rockstar has a support answer for the “worked out enough today” message, but the cited guidance does not establish an exact cooldown or workout threshold. Rockstar’s tips and its daily workout limit support article cover the training guidance and limit.
Other reported effects
A community-edited GTA Wiki reference on statistics also associates muscle with respect, a change in CJ’s movement animation at a threshold, and some girlfriend interactions when muscle is at maximum. Treat these as secondary details from a community-edited source; Rockstar’s cited tips establish the melee-damage benefit and training advice, not these additional effects.
