If someone asks whether friends are in the same pool, they usually mean whether their ranks let them queue together. Blizzard calls the standard Competitive classifications Narrow Group and Wide Group; a Wide Group can queue across a larger rank spread, but may face longer waits, less balanced matches and adjusted rank progress. The exact rules depend on the mode and can change, so the queue notice in your current game client is the practical guide for your party.
What “same competitive pool” can mean
The phrase does not appear to be a formal feature name in the official sources cited here. In a conversation about ranked play, it most likely means shared eligibility to queue together. It can also refer to the matchmaking pool associated with players’ platform or input method, which is a different question.

For party eligibility in standard Competitive, Blizzard’s terms are Narrow Group and Wide Group. These labels describe a group’s rank spread and how it is handled for queueing; they do not mean that everyone has the same displayed rank or matchmaking rating.
How Narrow and Wide Groups work in standard Competitive
Blizzard’s Season 10 explanation and April 2024 patch notes describe the following thresholds. They are dated rules, not a guarantee that every threshold remains in force today.

|---|---|---|
| Bronze through Diamond | Within five Skill Divisions | Wide Group |
| Masters | Within three Skill Divisions | Wide Group |
| Grandmaster or Champion included | Cannot form a Narrow Group | Wide Group |
Blizzard said Narrow Groups are matched with other Narrow Groups or solo players. Wide Groups are matched with other Wide Groups with a similar skill distribution, according to the Season 10 explanation. A Wide Group of four cannot queue under the cited April 2024 patch notes.
What a Wide Group should expect
- Longer queues: finding a comparable Wide Group can take more time.
- Potentially less balanced matches: Blizzard warns that wider rank spreads can make match quality less even.
- Adjusted rank progress: the April 2024 notes say progress changes less as the group gets wider and as its highest rank rises, with the modifier intended to reduce boosting.
Blizzard’s earlier explanation said players could compete together regardless of rank after the earlier grouping restrictions were removed. Read that as an explanation of the Wide Group system, not a promise that every party configuration is eligible under every later season’s rules.

Displayed rank is not the same as matchmaking skill
A player’s visible Skill Tier and Division are not the matchmaker’s underlying skill rating. In an earlier developer explanation, Blizzard said it did not use outward-facing Skill Tier or Division to form matches and distinguished visible rank from the matchmaker’s rating. That helps explain why two players with similar displayed ranks are not necessarily treated as identical in matchmaking, or why sharing a queue classification does not mean they have the same rating. The explanation is conceptual rather than a current technical specification of every matchmaking rule.
Stadium has different ranked grouping rules
Do not apply standard Competitive’s Narrow/Wide thresholds to Stadium. Blizzard’s Season 18 announcement describes a separate Stadium Competitive ladder with no grouping restrictions below Elite, then league-based limits:

If “pool” means platform or input matchmaking
Players sometimes use “pool” to ask whether different platforms or input configurations are matched together. Xbox Wire’s 2025 overview mentions input pools separately from Wide Groups, but the cited sources do not establish the complete current cross-platform rules. In that case, the answer depends on the players’ platform and input configuration; “same pool” alone is not specific enough to determine it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check your party’s eligibility
- Choose the mode you intend to play: standard Competitive or Stadium Competitive. Their grouping rules differ.
- Open the Competitive queue with your party assembled and review the queue notice or group classification shown in the current game client.
- If the client identifies the party as Wide or blocks queueing, use that current notice rather than assuming an older published threshold still applies.
The most useful details when asking someone whether you can queue together are the mode and each player’s rank. If the question is about input or platform matching instead, state the platforms and input configurations.
