Vortex is Nexus Mods’ downloadable mod manager: it helps you install and organize mods for supported games, manage load order and conflicts, and keep different mod setups in separate profiles. Nexus Mods connects it to its mod library, but Vortex is not the library or the game itself.
How Vortex fits with Nexus Mods
Nexus Mods is a platform for discovering, downloading, and sharing mods. Vortex is an application for managing mods for games it supports. Nexus Mods describes Vortex as integrated with its site so players can find, install, and play mods from there. See the official Vortex overview and Nexus Mods’ description of its platform.
What you can do with Vortex
- Install mods from Nexus Mods: Vortex connects browsing and installation, including one-click installation for mods, according to the current Vortex product page.
- Organize a mod setup: It provides tools for managing games, plugins, downloads, and save games, and can sort load order automatically.
- Handle conflicts: Its conflict-management features help you identify and address situations where mods affect the same game files or behavior. The precise options depend on the game and the mods involved.
- Keep separate playthrough setups: Profiles let you maintain independent combinations of mods rather than relying on one shared setup for every playthrough.
- Install curated Collections and notice updates: Nexus Mods advertises one-click installation for Collections and notifications when mod updates are available. These are product-page claims, not a guarantee that every mod or game has these capabilities.
Does Vortex work with every game?
No. Nexus Mods currently advertises support for over 500 games, but that is the site’s stated total, not an independent count, and support must be checked for the specific game you want to mod. The figure appears on the Vortex product page; it does not mean every game, mod, or feature works identically.
What do you need to use it?
Vortex is downloadable software, and the current product page offers a Windows download. You use it to manage mods for a supported game; the game and the mods themselves remain separate. Nexus Mods also links to guides, a Vortex wiki, and community resources from that page. Vortex supports extensions and plugins under the GPL-3 license, as described in the official overview.

What Vortex does not do
- It is not the game, and it is not a mod by itself.
- It does not make every game compatible with mods; check the supported-game information for your title.
- Its installation, sorting, and conflict tools do not guarantee that any combination of mods will work together. Results can depend on the game and the mods selected.
