Its blue body is only a subtle change from the regular Squirtle, and the exact shade depends on which game generation you are looking at.
How to tell a shiny Squirtle apart
The fastest visual cue is the shell. A regular Squirtle has a tan-to-brown shell, while a shiny Squirtle’s shell is green. The body is the harder part to judge, because the change is comparatively slight. Community color references describe it as a duller blue, and other descriptions call it a softer, purplish blue. Those two wordings are not contradictory; they describe different generations.
Why the body shade varies by generation
The Cave of Dragonflies color-change reference separates the shiny body by generation. Its wording is that the shiny Squirtle in the third generation had, in addition to the green shell, “a much lighter and brighter-colored body than the ordinary Squirtle,” while in the fourth generation “the shiny Squirtle is instead a softer, more purplish blue than the ordinary Squirtle.” The reference does not give an author or publication date, so treat it as a fan reference rather than an official palette specification.

Screenshots, sprites, and 3D models may not show identical shades, so judge the shell first and the body color only by comparing against a regular Squirtle from the same game.

Official identification baseline
The Pokémon Company’s Squirtle Pokédex entry lists Squirtle as #0007, a Water-type Tiny Turtle, and says: “After birth, its back swells and hardens into a shell. It sprays a potent foam from its mouth.” That page confirms the species but does not describe shiny colors.
Shiny Squirtle in Pokémon GO
Pokémon GO event announcements have sometimes said that Shiny Pokémon can appear during an event. The Pokémon Company’s March 3, 2026 announcement for the Pokémon 30th Anniversary event lists Squirtle among encounter opportunities and says, for those encounters, “If you’re lucky, you might encounter a Shiny one!” That wording applies to that event only. It does not mean Squirtle’s shiny form is available at all times or through any given method, and since the event was announced in March 2026, check the official Pokémon GO news for current availability before planning around it.

Where to check the color for yourself
- Use the shell as the first test. A green shell points to shiny; a tan or brown shell does not.
- Compare the body against a regular Squirtle in the same game and generation, not against an image from another version.
- For a broader list of shiny colors across Pokémon, the community Shiny Pokémon by Color list on Bulbapedia is a useful starting point, though it is a user-maintained page rather than an official source.
