A level 3 Sorcerer’s gains depend on which Dungeons & Dragons rules your campaign uses. Under the 2024 rules, the milestone is choosing a Sorcerer subclass; under the 2014 rules, it is gaining Metamagic. Both versions have four 1st-level spell slots and two 2nd-level spell slots at this level, but their spell-count systems differ.

What a level 3 Sorcerer gets under the 2024 rules
Choose a Sorcerer subclass
At level 3, you gain a Sorcerer subclass of your choice. The subclass provides its own features, so the exact benefits depend on which one you select. This is the defining level-3 change in the revised progression. D&D Beyond Basic Rules (2024)
Spellcasting and resources
The level-3 class table lists three Sorcery Points, four cantrips, six prepared Sorcerer spells, four 1st-level spell slots, and two 2nd-level spell slots. The six prepared spells can be any combination of Sorcerer spells of levels 1 and 2. These are your totals at level 3—not three newly gained Sorcery Points or four newly gained cantrips. When you gain a Sorcerer level, you can replace one prepared spell. Sorcerer spellcasting uses Charisma. D&D Beyond Basic Rules (2024)
Features you already have
Innate Sorcery arrives at level 1. As a bonus action, you can activate it for one minute: your Sorcerer spell save DC increases by 1, and you have advantage on attack rolls for Sorcerer spells. You can use it twice per long rest. Font of Magic and Metamagic arrive at level 2; at that level you gain two Metamagic options and may replace one option when you gain a Sorcerer level. Subclass benefits vary
For example, the Draconic Sorcery subclass in the official Basic Rules grants Draconic Resilience at level 3: your hit point maximum increases by 3, and your unarmored base AC becomes 10 + your Dexterity modifier + your Charisma modifier. Its Draconic Spells feature also makes Alter Self, Chromatic Orb, Command, and Dragon’s Breath always prepared. These are Draconic Sorcery benefits, not universal Sorcerer features. What changes under the 2014 rules?
The original progression puts Sorcerous Origin at level 1 and Metamagic at level 3. At level 3, the class table shows three Sorcery Points, four cantrips, four spells known, four 1st-level spell slots, and two 2nd-level spell slots. When you reach level 3, you learn one new spell of level 1 or 2; the rules also let you replace one Sorcerer spell you know when you gain a level. D&D Beyond Sorcerer Class (2014)

The 2024 revision moves subclass choice to level 3 and Metamagic to level 2, and changes the spell count from spells known to prepared spells. D&D Beyond edition comparison

Use the progression your campaign has adopted. If you are unsure, ask your DM or check the character-creation rules the group is using: a 2024 character chooses a subclass at level 3, while a 2014 character already has an Origin and gains Metamagic at level 3. The 2024 Basic Rules are available at D&D Beyond; the 2014 Basic Rules class entry is available at D&D Beyond. The 2024 spell-preparation rules are also cross-checked in the System Reference Document 5.2.
