It means the friend has been inactive for a long time and Steam has moved their status from Away to snooze. Steam does not publish how long that takes, and the zzz does not tell you what the person is physically doing.
What the zzz signal means
Steam’s Friends & Chat help article, published by Steam Support, explains that an Away status automatically switches to snooze “once you have been inactive for a long period of time.” The zzz display is the snooze-style cue that corresponds to that state. In practice, a friend showing zzz has been idle long enough that Steam no longer treats them as simply Away.
The Steam support article does not define the exact zzz glyph, and it gives no numeric delay. Community discussion from 2019 on the Steam forums describes the greyed-out zzz display as Away, and separates it from the plain grey display used for Offline. That thread shows how players read the interface at the time; it is not a formal Valve specification, so treat it as context rather than an official definition.
How zzz differs from other statuses
Several presence states look similar in the friends list. They differ mainly in what other users see and in what the account can still do.

The key distinction is between zzz and Offline. A friend in snooze is still connected to Steam and can receive messages. A friend who is Offline has signed out of the community, so messages and some features are unavailable until they return.
What zzz does not tell you
- It does not prove the person is asleep, away from the keyboard, or ignoring you. It reports only a Steam presence state.
- It does not reveal a fixed time window. Steam describes the trigger as “a long period of time,” and the cited help article does not publish a number. Any specific day or hour threshold circulating online is not an official Steam rule.
- It does not mean the friend has blocked you or removed you from their list.
When ZZZ means something else
Outside the friends list, “ZZZ” can be a different thing. Zenless Zone Zero, a game from HoYoverse, is commonly abbreviated as ZZZ. If you see ZZZ as a game name in your library, a store page, or a friend’s game activity, it refers to that title, not to a presence status. Check the surrounding context: a status icon sits next to a username in Friends & Chat, while a game name appears in a library, store listing, or “Now Playing” line.
Practical checks
- Open Steam and select Friends & Chat from the bottom-right corner of the client.
- Find the friend’s name. If a zzz appears beside it, the friend is in snooze.
- Send a message. A snoozing friend is still connected and will normally see it when they return.
- If the friend shows as grey with no zzz, they are Offline or Invisible, and you cannot tell which from the icon alone.
Bottom line
Zzz on Steam marks a friend who has been inactive long enough to move from Away into snooze. It is not Offline, it is not a fixed timer, and it does not show what the person is doing.
