You can play free-to-play Xbox games without Game Pass, and you can play eligible paid games you have bought individually. Game Pass is one way to access a changing library of games; it is not required for every Xbox game.

These are examples, not a promise that every title is available on every Xbox console or in every country. Xbox’s featured free-to-play list can change, so check the listing for your region and platform before downloading.
Paid games you own or buy individually
You can play an eligible paid game without an active Game Pass subscription if you own it. You can buy games individually from the Xbox Store; its US game browser, for example, shows Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V as priced listings alongside free-to-play games. Those are examples of store listings, not a claim that either game is outside Game Pass everywhere or that a disc edition is available for every console.
#1 Best Overall
- Day One Edition Bonuses: White Sailor School Uniform, Omamori: Peony, and Item Pack
- In 1960s Japan, Shimizu Hinako's secluded town of Ebisugaoka is consumed by a sudden fog, transforming her home into a haunting nightmare
- Hinako must navigate the twisted paths of Ebisugaoka, solving complex puzzles and confronting grotesque monsters to survive
- Embrace the beauty hidden within terror, or succumb to the madness that lies ahead
- Discover a new chapter in the SILENT HILL series, blending psychological horror with a haunting Japanese setting
If you already own a digital copy, use the account that purchased it. If you are considering a disc, first verify that the game has a disc edition compatible with your console. In either case, check the exact game and edition in your local Xbox Store, since availability and compatibility can vary by region and console generation.
Game Pass access is different from owning a game
A Game Pass subscription gives access to games included in its catalog under the applicable plan, platform, and region. Catalog membership can change. Xbox’s Game Pass availability notice says: “Game titles, number, features, and availability vary over time, by region, XBOX Game Pass plan, and platform.” If a title leaves the catalog, Xbox says it can be purchased to keep playing.

- BECOME A FEARSOME PIRATE- Strike fear in your foes as you board and sink enemy vessels as Edward Kenway, captain of the Jackdaw. Whether blending into crowds or leading daring assaults, switch between silent takedowns and fierce brawls as you effortlessly wield swords, pistols, and the Hidden Blade. With a cast of historical pirate legends at your side, defy empires amidst the age-old conflict opposing Assassins and Templars.
- A CLASSIC REBUILT FOR AN ENHANCED EXPERIENCE- Combat has been rebuilt for more dynamic encounters, emphasizing parries and takedowns, while stealth and parkour have been improved for smoother escapes and assassinations. Continuously upgrade the Jackdaw to face powerful enemy ships with enhanced naval mechanics featuring new alternate fire modes. Quality-of-life additions also address previous pain points, ensuring your experience is improved.
- THE CARIBBEAN LIKE NEVER BEFORE- Whether you’re sailing the open seas or journeying across untamed lands, discover a seamless open world built with the latest Anvil engine. Take in sweeping vistas as you brave stormy waters, dive into underwater shipwrecks, or push through dense tropical jungles. Enhanced by features such as Dolby Atmos and ray tracing, every scene feels more immersive, bringing the world’s beauty to life.
- EXPANDING EDWARD’S ADVENTURE- Building on top of the original story, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced introduces exclusive new content. Familiar faces will return, with new storylines dedicated to fan-favorite characters such as Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet. Unexpected allies will also cross your path, as three officers join you on your journey as part of the main narrative. More surprises await, such as new sea shanties, pets, a photo mode, and more.
That means a game appearing in Game Pass does not automatically mean you own it. If you want continued access regardless of catalog changes, check the purchase option for the specific title.
Check online multiplayer and compatibility for the game you want
Whether you can play a particular game without a subscription may depend on the mode. Xbox lists online console multiplayer among Game Pass plan benefits, but the sources cited here do not establish one universal subscription rule for every game or mode. Before relying on online play, check Xbox’s current plan details and the game’s store page or support information.

Free Play Days are limited-time trials, not a general substitute
Xbox describes Free Play Days as limited-time trials for Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and Essential members. They are not a general catalog of games anyone can play without a membership. Check Xbox’s current plan and offer information for eligibility and availability.
