Azahar is the current 3DS emulator to try for Pokémon X and Y on a compatible PC or Android device. It is based on Citra, whose archived FAQ explicitly says the Pokémon games work. That is evidence the games have run in the Citra emulator family—not a promise of flawless play on every Azahar build, device, graphics driver, or game backup.
Which emulator should you use for Pokémon X and Y?
Pokémon X and Pokémon Y are Nintendo 3DS games, so you need a 3DS emulator. Azahar describes itself as a free, open-source 3DS emulator based on Citra and supports desktop systems and Android. Its project repository is the place to check for current releases and official installation information.
Citra is relevant as compatibility history, not as the current download recommendation here: its FAQ is archived. The FAQ says, “All Pokémon games now work properly,” and specifically discusses Pokémon X and Y. That statement dates to March 4, 2024, so it should not be mistaken for a test of every current Azahar version.
Can Citra play Pokémon X and Y?
The archived Citra FAQ says that the Pokémon games work and calls out X and Y. It also notes that Linux users compiling the emulator from source need an AAC audio decoder for these games. The FAQ warns that performance and behavior can vary: games may exhibit slowdowns, graphical or gameplay glitches, black screens, freezes, or crashes.

Azahar is based on Citra, but compatibility history does not guarantee identical results across current builds and configurations. Recent user reports illustrate that variability without establishing a general problem:
- A September 26, 2026 report describes Pokémon Y performance changes between Azahar builds 2124.3 and 2125.0.1 on Android Vulkan, using a Samsung Galaxy Tab S9+ with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2/Adreno 740 and a stated Turnip driver. The reporter describes drops at higher internal resolutions in certain scenes; this is an individual report, not a representative benchmark.
- A January 2026 report describes Pokémon X crashing while loading one save on Azahar 2124.1 under Windows 11 with an i5-10400 and RTX 4060. The same reporter said Pokémon Y loaded on that setup and was unsure how to reproduce the X crash. The issue was closed as not planned; it does not show that Pokémon X generally fails.
Can you play Pokémon X and Y on Android?
Azahar supports Android, but its published minimums are emulator-wide baselines, not a Pokémon X/Y performance guarantee. The project lists Android 10.0 or later (64-bit), a Snapdragon 835 or better, OpenGL ES 3.2 or Vulkan 1.1, and 2 GB RAM; it recommends 4 GB RAM. A device meeting the minimum may still perform differently depending on its graphics hardware, driver, emulator build, and settings.

What does Azahar need on a PC?
Azahar lists support for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its published desktop minimums are:
- Windows: Windows 10 64-bit. Windows for ARM is not supported.
- macOS: macOS 13.4 (Ventura).
- Linux: a modern 64-bit distribution.
- Processor: x86-64 or ARM64; x86-64 requires SSE4.2. The listed single-core PassMark minimum is above 1,800.
- Graphics: OpenGL 4.3 or Vulkan 1.1.
- Memory: 2 GB minimum; 4 GB recommended.
These requirements do not predict a particular frame rate or confirm performance for Pokémon X or Y on a specific computer.
How do you get game files for Azahar?
Azahar’s documentation says you need a Nintendo 3DS to make the personal backup used by the emulator, and that Azahar does not support encrypted game files. Its listed supported formats include decrypted cartridge images (.cci/.3ds), installable files (.cia), and CXI/NCCH files. Consult Azahar’s game-dumping instructions for its file requirements.
The archived Citra FAQ likewise says users must dump games, updates, DLC, and other system files from a hacked 3DS, and warns against downloading commercial games. Copyright and copying rules differ by jurisdiction; check the laws where you live. Do not treat an online game download as a substitute for making a lawful personal backup.

Is a Nintendo DS emulator enough?
No. Pokémon X and Y were made for the Nintendo 3DS, not the Nintendo DS. Nintendo’s DS/DSi compatibility information concerns DS and DSi games on 3DS hardware; it does not make X and Y DS titles. Look for a 3DS emulator such as Azahar, not a DS-only emulator.

Use the Azahar project’s release page and official project instructions for downloads and setup. Citra’s archived pages warn that its site is archived and caution against other websites claiming to be official Citra sources, so avoid treating unofficial download sites as authoritative.

The archived Citra FAQ also says local Wi-Fi networking is supported while connections to Nintendo’s servers are not. Because that statement is about archived Citra documentation, do not assume it describes every current Azahar networking feature.
