Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePokémon Platinum’s Sinnoh Pokédex lists eleven Fire-type species across five evolutionary families: Chimchar, Monferno, Infernape, Ponyta, Rapidash, Flareon, Houndour, Houndoom, Magby, Magmar, and Magmortar. The count treats each evolved form as its own species. Being in the Pokédex does not mean every Fire type is equally easy to get, so the useful question is how each one enters your game.
The full Fire-type roster in Platinum
The table below uses the native Sinnoh Pokédex in Pokémon Platinum, as listed by Pokémon Database. Secondary types are shown because they affect matchups as much as the Fire type itself.

How each Fire-type family becomes available
Chimchar: the starter route
Chimchar is the Fire-type starter. You receive it from Professor Rowan’s briefcase on Route 201. Choosing Chimchar means you do not get Turtwig or Piplup on that save, and the choice cannot be undone without starting over. If you pick another starter and later want Chimchar, you can obtain it by trade rather than through the briefcase, and the Monferno and Infernape evolutions then follow the usual level-based path: Chimchar evolves into Monferno at level 14, and Monferno evolves into Infernape at level 36.
Ponyta: the main wild Fire type
Ponyta is the most straightforward wild Fire type. Platinum walkthroughs list wild Ponyta encounters, and it evolves into Rapidash at level 40. The exact earliest encounter level and route depend on your progress, so check a Platinum location guide for the route table before planning around a specific point in the story.
#1 Best Overall
- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
Houndour and Houndoom: Fire/Dark
Houndour and Houndoom are the only Fire types in the roster with a Dark secondary type, which makes them useful against Psychic and Ghost opponents. Houndour evolves into Houndoom at level 24. Platinum’s Pokédex lists both species, but this guide does not confirm a route-by-route progression for them. If you need exact location and timing, consult a Platinum-specific encounter table.
Magby, Magmar, and Magmortar: a conditional line
Magby is the least straightforward member of the roster. The location guide used for this article associates it with a LeafGreen cartridge inserted in the Game Boy Advance slot, so it is not a standard Platinum-only catch. Magmar is a wild option in Platinum guides, and Magby evolves into Magmar at level 30. Magmortar is the final stage. It comes from trading Magmar while it holds a Magmarizer, so you should not plan on finding it as a separate wild encounter.
Rank #2
- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
Flareon: an evolution, not a guaranteed early catch
Flareon is in the Pokédex as an Eevee evolution, and it requires a Fire Stone. Whether you can obtain Eevee early depends on your game state, and the sources reviewed do not establish the earliest Eevee timing for every save. Treat Flareon as a mid-game evolution option rather than a reliable early pick.
Choosing a Fire type for your team

- When it becomes available: Chimchar is decided at the start; Ponyta and Houndour depend on route progress; Magby depends on a cartridge condition; Flareon and Magmortar depend on evolution.
- Whether it costs you something: Chimchar means giving up another starter on that save.
- Wild catch or evolution: Ponyta and Houndour are the clearest wild options. Rapidash, Houndoom, Flareon, and Magmortar all require an earlier stage or an item.
- Secondary type: Monferno and Infernape are Fire/Fighting, Houndour and Houndoom are Fire/Dark, and the rest are pure Fire.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing versions: Encounter availability differs between Pokémon Platinum, Diamond and Pearl, and the Switch remakes Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. A route or condition from one version does not carry over to another.
- Counting legendaries: The eleven-species total covers the Fire entries in the Sinnoh listing. Heatran, a Fire/Steel legendary, is a separate case. If you want a total that includes legendaries, check whether it appears in the listing for your copy before quoting a number.
- Confusing the roster with the route: Being in the Pokédex does not tell you when a Pokémon appears. Check a location guide for timing.
In short, Chimchar is the Fire-type starter, Ponyta is the simplest wild Fire type, and the rest depend on evolution, a cartridge condition, or a route-level check.
