Its Story Mode remains available, but Rockstar shut down GTA Online for the PS3 version on December 16, 2021. That shutdown also ended Rockstar’s website stat tracking for the PS3 edition.
Can you still play GTA 5 on PS3?
Yes. Rockstar said the shutdown did not affect GTA V Story Mode on PlayStation 3. The offline campaign remains distinct from GTA Online, which depended on Rockstar’s online service. The game itself was not taken away when that service ended.

Could PS3 GTA Online progress be moved to a newer console?
No. Rockstar said PS3 and Xbox 360 GTA Online character data and progress could not be transferred to later platform generations before the shutdown. The old-console profile therefore did not provide a route to continue that character on a newer edition.
Rockstar’s current character transfer guidance, last updated January 29, 2025, covers migration from PS4 or Xbox One to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. It says profiles cannot move between PlayStation and Xbox console families, or from consoles to PC. It does not offer a migration path from PS3.

How GTA V moved beyond PS3
Rockstar announced PS4, Xbox One, and PC editions on June 9, 2014, describing technical and graphical improvements. The announcement said existing GTA Online characters and progression could transfer to a chosen new platform. The PS4 and Xbox One editions launched November 18, 2014, and the PC edition followed January 27, 2015.
Rockstar’s September 11, 2014 announcement also described additions for the newer editions, including new weapons, vehicles, activities, and denser traffic. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions arrived March 15, 2022, with improvements including higher-resolution graphics options and faster loading.

- Very Good - No Damage to disc!
Those later releases explain why GTA V continued on newer hardware; they did not keep the PS3 version’s online service running. Rockstar’s 2014 platform announcement, release-date announcement, and 2022 announcement document those edition changes.
