Roblox removed Guest Mode in 2017. From that point, people could no longer play Roblox experiences without creating an account, on mobile or on desktop. Roblox announced the change on October 3, 2017, and a later update in the same announcement thread recorded that Guest Mode had been turned off for iOS on October 23, 2017.
What changed
Before the change, a player could open a Roblox experience and play it without signing up. Roblox’s October 3, 2017 announcement on its Developer Forum said: “Some of you may have already noticed that we recently removed ‘Guest Mode’ on Roblox. This means that users will no longer be able to play games as a guest on mobile or desktop platforms.”
The announcement is the primary source for the change, and it is the reason the 2017 date is the one to cite.
What guests lost
Roblox said guests could not use several features that registered accounts had. According to the announcement, a guest could not:

- Each gift card grants a free virtual item upon redemption.
- Save game progress
- Chat
- Play with friends
- Purchase items in games
- Leave feedback, such as likes, dislikes, and favorites
Those are the features Roblox said registration unlocked. Because of that, a guest session was a limited version of the platform, not a free trial of the full one.
Roblox’s stated reason
Roblox framed the decision around feature access and retention. The company said requiring sign-up would give new users access to the full set of features, and that this fuller experience helped keep users on the platform for longer.

That is the company’s own rationale. The announcement does not measure the effect of the change, and it does not provide a figure for how much registered-account play increased. Treat the retention explanation as Roblox’s position rather than an independently verified result.
Timeline
- October 3, 2017: Roblox announces on its Developer Forum that Guest Mode has been removed and that users can no longer play games as a guest on mobile or desktop platforms.
- October 23, 2017: A Roblox Developer Relations Team update in the same thread states: “Guest Mode has been turned off for iOS.”
The announcement said Roblox would update the thread once Guest Mode was disabled across all platforms. The iOS update is the only dated platform milestone in the record. It is not a full platform-by-platform shutdown schedule.

What the record does not establish
The primary announcement and the thread update do not give a complete dated timeline for every platform. They also do not describe how legacy app versions, or sessions that started before the change, were handled. Do not assume that every technical trace of guest play stopped on a single day. The sources establish the 2017 removal and the October 23 iOS milestone, and nothing more precise.

Players who remember playing without an account, or who find older tutorials and videos that show guest play, often ask what happened. Community questions in the same thread included “When are Guest being removed?” and “Does the website or any of the apps support guest mode?” The second question came from community discussion, not from an official Roblox statement, so it should not be read as company policy.
