Grand Theft Auto V is rated M for Mature 17+ by the U.S. Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). Its rating includes Strong Sexual Content and Nudity, but the official summary distinguishes between sexual activity heard or implied and the specific scenes where nudity appears. It also warns about intense violence, strong language, mature humor, and drug and alcohol use.
What sexual content and nudity does GTA 5 include?
The ESRB describes implied fellatio and masturbation, as well as sex acts involving a prostitute. In those prostitute sequences, the rating summary says no nudity is shown, though sexual moaning can be heard. The game’s Strong Sexual Content descriptor therefore does not mean that every sexual scene visibly depicts nudity.

The ESRB identifies nudity in two specific contexts: topless lap dances in a strip club and exposed male genitalia among cult members in a non-sexual setting. These are the examples listed in the official rating summary.
What other mature content is in the game?
The ESRB summary also describes substantial non-sexual mature content:

- Violence and gore: Frequent blood-splatter effects, rare dismemberment, and an intense, prolonged torture sequence in which the player is prompted to extract information.
- Language and humor: Strong language and mature humor.
- Drugs and alcohol: Depictions include smoking marijuana, cocaine use, and alcohol use, including driving after drinking.
These elements are part of the same age-rating picture as the sexual content; the game’s mature material is not limited to sex and nudity.
What does the M rating mean for parents and players?
The ESRB lists Grand Theft Auto V as M for Mature 17+ in the United States, with the descriptors Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. The ESRB says content descriptors identify material that may have contributed to a rating or may be of interest or concern to consumers. See the ESRB’s official GTA V rating.

This is U.S. rating guidance, not a universal age classification. Players elsewhere should check the rating system and store listing for their region, as well as the exact platform and edition they intend to play.
Does this apply to GTA Online?
Rockstar’s online reporting guidance includes “Adult Nudity or Sexual Content” as a category for user communications or offensive player-created content. That is moderation guidance for online content; it is separate from the ESRB’s description of the single-player story and should not be treated as evidence that every listed online behavior occurs in the campaign. See Rockstar’s reporting guidance.
