John Marston then delivers the fatal shot, and Dutch walks away without speaking to John. Dutch returns in Red Dead Redemption, set in 1911, where he has formed a new gang. The game never states a clear spoken reason for the shooting.
What happens at Mount Hagen
The moment comes at the end of the epilogue, which follows every version of Arthur Morgan’s Chapter 6 ending. The sequence runs in this order:

- 1899, the Chapter 6 ending. The Van der Linde gang has fractured. Arthur confronts Dutch and Micah, and a Pinkerton attack forces the group apart. Arthur’s final scenes vary with his honor and final choice, but every ending continues into the epilogue. The RDR2.org endings guide covers how those branches differ.
- 1907, the standoff. John, Sadie, and Charles track Micah to Mount Hagen. Dutch has joined up with Micah again and emerges from the cabin during the confrontation.
- The shot. After John pleads with him, Dutch shoots Micah in the chest.
- The kill. Micah stays alive long enough to reach for his revolver. John shoots him dead.
- The exit. Dutch leaves in silence, without a final exchange with John.
For players, the detail that matters most is the order. Dutch fires the first shot, and John’s shot is the one that kills Micah. The epilogue credits then show Bureau agents investigating Micah’s death and watching John at Beecher’s Hope. That aftermath is described in a fan-run walkthrough of Epilogue Part 2, which is not affiliated with Rockstar Games, so check the in-game sequence yourself if the exact wording matters to you.
Why Dutch shoots Micah
The game does not give a definitive motive. Nothing in the epilogue has Dutch explain the shot, and his exit is silent. Two facts from earlier in the story give context, and they are the only parts that are established:

- During the gang’s collapse, Dutch sided with Micah and left Arthur and John behind.
- By 1907, Dutch had reunited with Micah, so the shooting is a reversal of that alliance rather than the first sign of a split.
Anything more specific, such as guilt, revenge, or repentance, is interpretation. Players and writers can argue for those readings from Dutch’s history, but the game does not confirm any of them. The RDR2.org character page for Dutch van der Linde is a useful reference for his arc before the epilogue.
Where Dutch goes after Mount Hagen
Dutch is absent from the epilogue’s remaining events. The RDR2.org Van der Linde gang page picks up his story in 1911, when he resurfaces in Red Dead Redemption with a new gang. That is the only place the series reveals what he does next, and the game’s own events do not explain how he got from the 1907 shooting to that point.
