After the Locust War, Marcus Fenix retired from active service, built a family with Anya Stroud, and raised their son, JD. Gears of War 4 picks up 25 years later, when a new threat draws Marcus back into the fight. Gears 5 continues the story in JD’s generation, while Gears: E-Day goes back to a much earlier point in Marcus’s life.
How Gears of War 3 ends for Marcus
Marcus and his team defeat the Locust and Queen Myrrah, but victory does not restore Sera. The planet is badly damaged, and the survivors face the work of rebuilding. In the closing conversation, Anya answers Marcus’s question about what comes next: “Tomorrow, Marcus. We’ve finally got a tomorrow.” Microsoft’s Gears of War 4 story guide attributes the line to Anya and presents it as a turn from war toward the future.

What Marcus does between Gears 3 and Gears 4
Marcus steps away from active military service and makes a life with Anya. They have a son, JD. Marcus’s postwar life is quieter, though not entirely detached from danger: the official guide describes him keeping weapons at home and spending time with his family and greenhouse garden. Xbox’s Gears 5 character page says Anya initially led the government after the Locust War and that Marcus played a limited role in the COG.
Why Marcus returns in Gears of War 4
Gears of War 4 begins 25 years after the war’s end. The intervening years bring a period of peace and rebuilding, but Sera remains a harsh world. A new threat, the Swarm, emerges as JD and his companions take the lead. Marcus is drawn out of retirement to help them, making the game the direct answer to what happened to him after the original trilogy.

How Gears 5 and Gears: E-Day fit the timeline
Gears 5 continues the later-era story
Gears 5 continues the next-generation storyline and the family context established in Gears of War 4. Xbox identifies JD as Marcus and Anya’s son. Xbox Wire describes Gears 4 and Gears 5 as ongoing stories; the official material cited here does not establish the consequences of Gears 5’s final choice, so it should not be treated as settling one outcome as canonical.

Gears: E-Day goes backward
Gears: E-Day is an origin story set before the original Gears of War, following younger Marcus and Dom during the Locust invasion. It is set 14 years before the first game, so it is not the chronological sequel to Gears 3. Xbox Wire’s E-Day announcement describes its earlier setting and origin-story focus.
