Spoilers for the original trilogy and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice. Maya Fey becomes Phoenix Wright’s close friend and self-appointed assistant after he defends her in the aftermath of her sister Mia’s murder. Her story then moves between Phoenix’s cases and her training as a Kurain spirit medium, before a family crisis in the final case of the original trilogy forces her to confront what it means to inherit the role of Master. Years later, she reunites with Phoenix in Khura’in, where she is continuing her training.
How Maya becomes Phoenix’s assistant
Maya is Mia Fey’s younger sister and a trainee in the Kurain Channeling Technique. After Mia is murdered, Maya is accused of the crime. Phoenix defends her, and once she is cleared, she appoints herself his assistant. Capcom describes her as a constant companion in many of Phoenix’s early cases, bringing investigative insight as well as comic relief. (Capcom)
Maya is more than a sidekick: her mediumship and her ties to Mia affect the cases directly. The Kurain technique allows a medium to summon a departed person’s spirit through a living body; the channeler can also take on physical traits of the person being channeled. Maya’s connection to Mia gives Phoenix a way to receive help from his mentor after her death. (Capcom)
What Maya’s magatama does for Phoenix
Early in Justice for All, Maya gives Phoenix the magatama she wears. Once spiritually charged, it lets him perceive Psyche-Locks: the game’s visual representation of secrets someone is keeping. Phoenix can break those locks by presenting evidence. The gift remains useful to his investigations even when Maya has returned to Kurain and is not beside him. (Capcom)

Why Maya is absent from some cases
Maya does not accompany Phoenix in every case. Her time away is tied to returning home to Kurain and continuing her spirit-medium training. She appears again as Phoenix’s psychic assistant in Trials and Tribulations; Nintendo’s publisher description of the DS game identifies her in that role. (Nintendo)
What happens to Maya in the trilogy’s final case
The last case of Trials and Tribulations, “Bridge to the Turnabout,” draws Maya into a crisis involving the Fey family, her mother, and her cousin Pearl. It is the emotional culmination of her original-trilogy story, not simply another return to Phoenix’s assistant role. Maya must also consider whether to become the next Master and accept the responsibilities attached to that position. (Capcom)

After the ordeal, Maya comforts Pearl, who believes the events were her fault. In Capcom localization editor Janet Hsu’s retrospective, Maya reflects on the people who supported her, including Mia, her mother, Armando, Phoenix, and Pearl. Maya says, “The only reason I’m still here at all is thanks to everyone who was there for me,” followed by, “That’s why… I have to be strong.” The scene is subdued before she returns to her familiar cheerful manner: her resilience is shown through connection and support, not as proof that she has escaped grief untouched. Years later, Maya is in the Kingdom of Khura’in to complete her training and master the Kurain Channeling Technique. Phoenix visits her there to celebrate the end of her long spiritual training. Capcom still characterizes her as spirited, so her growth does not erase the playful personality that made her Phoenix’s lively companion in the earlier games. (Capcom)
