The Xbox 360 Store stopped selling new games, DLC, and other entertainment content on July 29, 2024, but it did not erase games you already bought. You can still play and redownload purchased games and DLC on Xbox 360. Playing on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S depends on whether a title is in the backward-compatibility catalog; online multiplayer depends on whether that game’s publisher still runs its servers.
Can I still play my Xbox 360 games?
Yes. The closure ended purchases through the Xbox 360 Store on the console and the Xbox 360 Marketplace website; it did not end access to games and DLC already attached to your account. Xbox says previously purchased content remains playable and can be downloaded again if you deleted it. Xbox’s closure FAQ explains the change.
Physical game discs also remain playable on an Xbox 360. The store shutdown does not prevent you from using a disc you own.
Can I redownload games I bought?
Yes. Sign in with the account that bought the game and use the console’s download or purchase-history options to find eligible owned content. Xbox says deleted purchases can be downloaded again. Xbox does not promise that every game or service will remain available indefinitely, so keep your account credentials and any relevant account information secure.

Compatible digital Xbox 360 games you own can also appear in the Ready to Install section on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. That option only applies to titles included in the backward-compatibility program.
Can I play Xbox 360 games on Xbox One or Series X|S?
Only selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games are backward compatible; the closure did not make the full Xbox 360 library playable on newer consoles. Check the official backward-compatibility catalog for the exact title, then check its current store listing if you intend to buy it.

| What you own | Xbox 360 | Xbox One or Series X | Xbox Series S |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purchased digital game | Playable and redownloadable, according to Xbox. | Playable if the title is backward compatible; owned compatible titles appear in Ready to Install. | Playable if the title is backward compatible and available digitally; Series S has no disc drive. |
| Physical Xbox 360 disc | Playable on the console. | Playable only if the title is backward compatible; the console downloads the game and the disc must remain inserted to play. | Not playable from disc; Series S is digital-only. |
Xbox’s backward-compatibility instructions describe the download process for compatible games. Features vary by title, so compatibility alone does not guarantee that every game’s DLC, online functions, or save behavior will work identically on a newer console.
Can I still play online with friends?
The store closure did not automatically shut down multiplayer. Xbox said players could continue connecting through multiplayer for purchased games as long as the publisher still supports the game’s online servers. Server status is specific to each game and can change; check the publisher’s current support information for a particular title.

The Movies & TV app stopped functioning on Xbox 360 after July 29, 2024, so purchased video content can no longer be watched through that app on the 360. Xbox says purchased content remains in your library and can be viewed through Movies & TV on supported Windows devices running Windows 10 or later, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Eligible purchases may also be available through Movies Anywhere. See Xbox’s closure FAQ for the stated access options.

What to check before switching consoles
- Identify your copy. Determine whether you own the game digitally or on disc, and sign in to the account associated with a digital purchase.
- Check the title in Xbox’s compatibility catalog. Do not assume that a game runs on Xbox One or Series X|S just because it runs on Xbox 360.
- Check your console’s hardware. Xbox One and Series X require a disc drive for disc-based play, and the disc must stay inserted. Series S cannot play discs.
- Check the features you need. Ask the publisher whether online servers are still active, and verify title-specific DLC and save support before relying on those features.
