What Happens If You Block With a Creature and Then Sacrifice It? (Magic: The Gathering Rules)

In Magic: The Gathering, sacrificing a blocker before combat damage leaves the attacker blocked, so it deals no damage unless it has trample. Here is how timing, trample, and sacrificing the attacker change the result.

If you block an attacking creature and then sacrifice your blocker before combat damage, the attacker stays blocked. Without trample, it deals no combat damage to you or to your planeswalkers, and your sacrificed creature deals no damage either. Trample is the main exception: the attacker can assign its damage through to the defending player or planeswalker. If you sacrifice the attacking creature instead, that creature leaves combat and deals no combat damage at all.

Sacrificing the creature that blocked

Once a defending player declares a creature as a blocker, the attacking creature is blocked for the rest of that combat. Removing the blocker afterward does not reopen the attacker to the defending player. Wizards of the Coast’s release notes for Marvel Super Heroes state the principle directly: a blocked creature remains blocked through the end of combat even if the creatures that blocked it have left the battlefield, unless the attacking creature itself leaves combat.

An ordinary attacker deals no damage

A sacrificed blocker is no longer on the battlefield when combat damage is dealt, so it cannot deal damage as a blocker. The attacker, lacking trample, has no legal way to assign damage to the player or planeswalker it attacked, so that damage is simply not dealt. The attacker is not “unblocked” by the sacrifice.

Trample changes the result

A creature with trample can assign lethal damage to the blockers still present and assign the rest to the player or planeswalker it attacked. If the blocker was sacrificed, no blockers remain, so the trampling attacker can assign all of its combat damage to the defending player or planeswalker. This is the one common situation in which sacrificing a blocker still lets the attacker’s damage through.

When you can make the sacrifice

After blockers are declared, players receive priority in the declare blockers step. In that window, you can cast spells or activate abilities, including an activated ability with a sacrifice cost, provided you can pay the cost and the ability’s timing restrictions allow it. A spell or another ability on the battlefield may also cause the sacrifice. The sacrifice must happen before combat damage is assigned for it to remove the blocker’s damage.

Sacrificing the attacking creature

If you sacrifice the creature that is attacking, it leaves combat and deals no combat damage. Its blocker remains on the battlefield as a blocking creature, but it has nothing to block and deals no damage. Trample does not matter in this case, because the attacker that would have assigned it is gone.

Why you cannot respond to combat damage

Combat damage does not use the stack under current rules. The rules change that moved combat damage off the stack dates to 2009. Wizards’ Magic: The Gathering Foundations Update Bulletin (Jess Dunks and Eric Levine, November 14, 2024) confirms the current procedure: players “don’t make any decisions about assigning combat damage during the declare blockers step,” and once the combat damage step begins, each attacking creature assigns its combat damage among the creatures blocking it, divided as its controller sees fit at that time.

In practice, that means the window to sacrifice a blocker to affect damage closes when combat damage is assigned. After that, you cannot respond by sacrificing a creature to change how the damage was dealt.

First strike and double strike

Creatures with first strike or double strike create an extra combat damage step. A sacrifice that happens between those steps can change the outcome for the regular damage step. For example, if a first-strike blocker deals its damage first and you then sacrifice it before the regular damage step, the attacker without trample still deals no damage to you. If the attacker has trample and the blocker is gone, the attacker assigns its regular damage to the defending player or planeswalker.

Check the specific card before ruling

The answer above assumes ordinary combat and a sacrifice that happens in the declare blockers step. Card text can change the result, so check the following before deciding:
