Canceling your World of Warcraft subscription stops its recurring renewal; it does not immediately end access. Blizzard customer-support guidance says you can keep playing until the game time already on your account expires. The account then becomes inactive, but you can return by adding game time or starting a subscription.
What changes when you cancel?
Blizzard support guidance says cancellation turns off future subscription renewals, while leaving your current paid game time in place. In a 2022 support-forum response, Blizzard representative Kyzera wrote: “After canceling, your World of Warcraft account will be playable until your current game time expires.” Once that time runs out, the account becomes inactive.
Canceling is not the same as deleting your Battle.net account or removing your characters. A Blizzard customer-support representative said characters should remain on an inactive account, subject to changes in the game itself. This character-retention guidance comes from a support-forum answer, rather than a formal, current guarantee.
What should you do before your game time expires?
Clear anything that could expire while you are away. Blizzard support guidance warns that expired mail and auctions are purged, so collect mail you need and resolve active auctions before your account becomes inactive.

- Collect important mail and settle active auctions if you plan to take a long break.
- After canceling, confirm that the subscription is marked canceled and keep the confirmation.
How to cancel the recurring subscription
- Sign in to Battle.net and open Games & Subscriptions.
- Find the specific World of Warcraft account and select Manage.
- Choose Cancel Subscription, then complete the prompts.
- Return to the account page to verify the cancellation status. Blizzard’s interface can change, so use the current billing-support flow if the option is missing or the renewal appears to be processing.
Blizzard’s support-forum instructions describe this path, but the current account interface may differ. The available guidance does not establish a universal cutoff for canceling close to a renewal date. If a charge is imminent or you cannot confirm the cancellation, check the account’s billing status and contact Blizzard billing support rather than assuming the renewal has been stopped.
Can you play without an active subscription?
Access depends on the WoW mode and what is currently available to your account. Blizzard’s support page says Modern WoW has a limited free trial; a subscription allows play beyond level 20 in Modern WoW and access to listed Classic versions without restriction. The modes Blizzard lists can change, so check its current World of Warcraft game modes and versions page for the mode you want to play.

Will Blizzard refund a subscription charge?
Blizzard describes subscriptions as generally non-refundable, with possible exceptions considered through its refund process. Canceling stops future renewal; it does not automatically reverse a charge that has already been made. For a recent or disputed charge, use Blizzard’s current billing and refund support flow to check whether the charge is eligible for review.
