Using mods in GTA Online can get your Rockstar account suspended or permanently banned. A suspension blocks online play and can reset your character and progress; a permanent ban has no expiration date and can make your online assets inaccessible. Rockstar says the outcome depends on the conduct and its severity, so there is no published penalty schedule that guarantees a specific result for a particular mod.
What Rockstar can do
Rockstar lists modding in online games as conduct that can violate its Terms of Service and lead to account action. Its Online Suspension and Ban Policy, last updated February 24, 2026, says consequences may include a temporary suspension or permanent ban. The company’s account-impact guidance, last updated December 10, 2024, explicitly includes modding among grounds for suspension or ban.
Rockstar does not publish a universal chart matching each type of mod to a fixed penalty. It says outcomes depend on the actions and their severity; a particular case cannot be predicted from the fact that a player used a mod alone.
Suspension versus permanent ban

These effects are described in Rockstar’s current general policy and its account-impact article. Rockstar also says a later violation after a temporary suspension may result in a permanent ban.

How PC anti-cheat fits in
Rockstar’s BattlEye information is specifically about GTA Online on PC, not a description of every platform’s detection system. In its BattlEye FAQ, last updated June 17, 2025, Rockstar says BattlEye detects active cheat software and attempts to manipulate protected code or sabotage other players’ experience; active cheat software can result in suspension or a ban. BattlEye only needs to be active during online sessions, according to that FAQ.
For PC graphics-mod compatibility problems, Rockstar’s troubleshooting direction is to remove the graphics mod from the game’s installation files. That is troubleshooting advice, not assurance that visual modifications are safe or supported in GTA Online.

Story Mode mods are a separate case
Rockstar maintains separate guidance for PC single-player or Story Mode modifications. Its Story Mode mods policy page, last updated September 15, 2026, concerns single-player modifications. It does not override Rockstar’s explicit online policy against modding in online games, and it should not be treated as permission to use modified files or software while accessing GTA Online.
Other possible account effects
Rockstar says it routinely removes illegitimately gained GTA$ and adjusts RP. Its money-removal and RP-adjustment guidance, last updated May 2, 2024, says GTA$ purchased through Shark Cards are outside that specific illegitimate-money removal process. That exception is not immunity from separate account action for violating online rules.

Rockstar also lists “Cheating or Modding” as a reportable category in its GTA Online reporting guidance, last updated December 5, 2025.

Rockstar’s cited policy pages do not state a detection probability, ban rate, or average suspension length. They also do not promise that a specific kind of mod will receive a particular penalty. The reliable takeaway is the policy risk: online modding can lead to a suspension or permanent ban, with loss of access and possible or stated resets depending on the action.
