Naming a pillager gives it a custom name and ordinarily stops it from despawning naturally—but it does not tame the mob or make it friendly. It remains hostile, and a switch to Peaceful difficulty can still remove it.
What changes when you name a pillager?
The pillager gains the name you assign, and it ordinarily gains the persistence associated with named mobs. Minecraft’s official Name Tag guide says, “A named creature won’t despawn except in a handful of unusual circumstances.” That is not a guarantee that the pillager will remain forever under every condition.
Naming changes the pillager’s identity and persistence, not its allegiance. It remains a hostile monster; Microsoft’s Bedrock entity-family documentation lists Pillager in the monster family.
Will a named pillager despawn?
In ordinary play on a difficulty other than Peaceful, a named pillager ordinarily does not despawn naturally. The important exception is Peaceful: Minecraft’s guide notes that hostile mobs can disappear when the game is switched to that difficulty, even if they have been named.

This describes the general name-tag rule, not an edition-by-edition guarantee for every current Java and Bedrock version. Historical bug reports are not enough to establish expected behavior today: one Java report concerns named hostile mobs despawning after a switch to Peaceful, while a Bedrock report about random despawning in version 1.16.20 was marked duplicate.
How to name a pillager
- Place a name tag in an anvil.
- Enter the name you want and pay the displayed experience cost to rename the tag.
- Use the renamed tag on the pillager. The tag is consumed when used.
Minecraft’s guide to name tags describes the anvil-and-experience process and applying the tag to a mob.

Does a pillager name trigger a special effect?
No pillager-specific naming effect is established by the available name-tag references. The community-edited Name Tag reference lists special-name effects for certain other mobs, but does not list one for pillagers. Treat a custom pillager name as a label, not as a known Easter egg or gameplay transformation.
