Joseph Seed survives Far Cry 5’s finale in both of its main endings. If you choose Resist, he gets the unconscious Deputy to shelter after nuclear explosions begin. If you choose Walk Away, he remains behind as the officers drive off, and the game cuts away before showing what happens next. Far Cry: New Dawn later follows the Collapse branch and identifies the Deputy as the Judge.
Joseph’s fate depends on which ending you choose
Far Cry 5 has two choices at its finale: Resist or Walk Away. Neither shows Joseph dying. There is also a separate, brief alternate ending at the opening of the game, before the final confrontation.

|---|---|---|
| Resist | The Deputy fights Joseph; nuclear explosions begin, and Joseph takes the unconscious Deputy toward Dutch’s shelter. | Alive, with the Deputy in his custody. |
| Walk Away | The officers leave in a vehicle. “Only You,” associated with Jacob Seed’s conditioning of the Deputy, plays on the radio before the scene cuts. | Alive; what happens after the drive begins is not shown. |
| Wait at the opening | Rather than handcuff Joseph, the player waits. The sheriff decides to leave, the group walks away, and the credits roll. | Not arrested in this short alternate ending; it is not the final confrontation. |
What happens if you Resist Joseph?
At the finale, choosing Resist leads to a fight with Joseph. After the Deputy defeats him, nuclear explosions begin across the region. Joseph takes the unconscious Deputy toward Dutch’s shelter; the vehicle crashes, and Joseph gets the Deputy inside. The game ends with Joseph alive and the Deputy under his control.
Far Cry: New Dawn supplies a later glimpse of this Collapse branch: Joseph survives, and the Deputy is known as the Judge. GameSpot’s Far Cry: New Dawn character guide discusses the returning characters and references.

What happens if you choose Walk Away?
Choosing Walk Away at the finale leaves Joseph alive while the officers drive away. The radio plays “Only You,” the song linked to Jacob Seed’s conditioning of the Deputy, and the scene cuts before the game shows where the vehicle goes or what happens to the group.
The song makes the departure feel threatening, but that implication is not a depicted outcome. The game does not confirm what happens after the cut, nor does this scene establish that the catastrophe has been prevented.

What does the ending say about Joseph’s prophecy?
In the Resist ending, the explosions make Joseph’s prediction of a societal Collapse appear to come true. Ubisoft describes him as preaching that collapse is imminent and claiming Eden’s Gate can offer salvation. But the timing of the explosions does not prove Joseph caused them: the ending shows the catastrophe beginning, not who or what set it off.
Ubisoft’s official character-quotes feature includes Joseph’s line: “God told me of the Collapse. I gathered my family to prepare for it. But Hell had followed the White Horse. The one that could not walk away. And my path ended here, in these very walls.” The line reflects Joseph’s perspective in the follow-up context; it is not a neutral explanation of the explosions’ cause.

Does Far Cry: New Dawn make the Resist ending canon?
New Dawn follows the post-Collapse branch and shows Joseph and the Deputy’s later identities. That makes Resist the branch continued by this specific sequel. It does not, by itself, establish a single definitive timeline for the entire Far Cry franchise or prove that the Walk Away scene has a confirmed aftermath.

Joseph’s apocalyptic beliefs are central to the conflict, and the finale places his prophecy beside a sudden catastrophe. Ubisoft’s 2017 feature on the game describes its premise as drawing on anxiety about catastrophic events and uncertainty. Dan Hay, then executive producer and creative director, recalled “this crushing weight” of the possibility that “something catastrophic would happen.” That context helps explain the ending’s focus on dread and uncertainty without resolving the cause of the explosions.
