He goes to Louisiana believing his wife is dead, finds her at the Baker residence, and ultimately confronts Eveline before Chris Redfield’s team extracts him. The story DLC then follows Chris and Zoe rather than continuing Ethan’s rescue.
Why does Ethan go to the Baker residence?
Set in 2017, Capcom’s official timeline describes Ethan’s journey to Louisiana in search of Mia, his wife, whom he believed had died. His search brings him to the Baker family’s home, where he becomes trapped in the family’s violent and increasingly disturbing ordeal.

Does Ethan survive Resident Evil 7?
Yes. In the main story route that saves Mia, Ethan escapes the Baker property, makes his way through the wrecked ship and salt mine, and defeats Eveline. Chris Redfield and his team arrive to extract him. Capcom describes Ethan’s escape as concluding in the main game in its Gold Edition and Not a Hero announcement.
Which serum choice is followed by the story?
Near the end, Ethan has to choose whether to use the serum on Mia or Zoe. The choice changes the ending: the Mia route is the one followed by the later story, while the alternate Zoe route ends with Mia dead and Zoe apparently killed. These are alternative player outcomes, not events that happen one after another in the same playthrough. The branch details are reported in the game’s plot synopsis; Capcom’s cited official summaries establish the premise and DLC order but do not detail the branch endings.

What happens to Ethan after the ending?
Ethan’s escape is the endpoint of his role in Resident Evil 7’s main story. The follow-up DLC shifts attention to other characters rather than presenting another version of his rescue:

Why is Ethan connected to the mold?
A later-game revelation says Ethan died during his first encounter with Jack Baker and was revived through the mold. The plot synopsis describes mold-related control and mutation, but Capcom’s official pages cited here do not establish the precise circumstances or mechanics of Ethan’s revival. Treat this as a later-story spoiler, rather than a detail explained in the main game’s ending.
