If you finish Fallout 4 with the Railroad, the faction’s version of The Nuclear Option destroys the Institute and eliminates the Brotherhood of Steel as a threat. The Railroad survives, but this is a victory for its cause—not an ending in which it is shown taking over or governing the Commonwealth.
What happens in the Railroad ending?
The Railroad’s main questline culminates in its version of The Nuclear Option, an operation against the Institute. Before that final assault, the Railroad route removes the Brotherhood threat. The Institute is then destroyed, ending its role in the main conflict, while the Railroad remains intact.

In short, siding with the Railroad means completing its questline and accepting a direct victory over both of its major enemies. The game’s ending does not establish the Railroad as a conventional government or show it administering the Commonwealth afterward.

When do faction choices become consequential?
Helping or joining a faction early does not necessarily make every rival an immediate enemy. Hostility develops as you advance the competing main questlines, and later decisions can close off routes. The Railroad’s Underground Undercover quest is one consequential progression point; do not assume that early cooperation guarantees that all factions will remain available indefinitely.

If you are undecided about which groups you want to keep, make a separate save before major faction quests. That gives you a way to revisit a choice if its consequences are not the ones you wanted.

Yes. The Minutemen route can destroy the Institute without requiring the Railroad or Brotherhood to be destroyed, as long as you have not made those factions hostile. During the Minutemen version of The Nuclear Option, sound the evacuation signal: failing to do so can make the Railroad hostile.

This is an alternative to the Railroad ending, not a way to complete the Railroad’s own finale while preserving the Brotherhood. Choose it if keeping both factions standing matters more to you than finishing the Railroad route.
