Missing a Chaos Emerald in the original Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Sonic the Hedgehog does not stop you from finishing the game. Collecting all the emeralds unlocks an alternative ending; the emerald hunt is an optional completion goal, not a requirement for reaching the later Zones.
Can you still beat Sonic 1 if you miss an emerald?
Yes. You can continue through the game’s Zones and reach the ending without collecting every Chaos Emerald. SEGA’s Genesis Classics manual describes the emerald hunt and the Secret Zones, while its Sonic Origins manual says that collecting all the emeralds unlocks an alternative ending.
The official material establishes that alternate-ending condition, but does not describe the full non-alternate ending animation in detail. It is safest to say that missing an emerald means you do not meet the all-emerald condition for the alternative ending, rather than promise a particular scene or dialogue.
How to get another chance at a Chaos Emerald
In the Genesis/Mega Drive game, Secret Zones are where you collect the Chaos Emeralds. SEGA’s manual lists six Zones—Green Hill, Marble, Spring Yard, Labyrinth, Star Light and Scrap Brain—and says each Secret Zone contains an emerald.

- Finish Act One or Act Two of any Zone with at least 50 Rings.
- When the giant gold Ring appears at the end, jump through it to enter the Secret Zone. SEGA’s manual puts it this way: “Clear Act One or Act Two of any Zone with 50 or more Rings and you will be transported to the Secret Zone by jumping through the giant gold Ring.”
- Inside the rotating maze, steer Sonic toward the Chaos Emerald and avoid the Goal Blocks. Touching a Goal Block ends the stage, so reach the emerald first.
If you are still in a qualifying Act, this gives you an opportunity to enter another Secret Zone and collect an emerald. The original game’s rules do not guarantee another opportunity after every missed emerald; it depends on whether you can reach another eligible Act ending with enough Rings.
What if you are playing Sonic Origins?
Sonic Origins Anniversary Mode has a documented retry option: SEGA says you can retry a Special Stage while you have a Coin available. That is an edition- and mode-specific option, not a feature to assume in the original Genesis/Mega Drive release. The relevant distinction is whether your version provides a Coin retry, not whether a missed emerald prevents you from continuing the main game.

Which version of Sonic 1 does this answer cover?
This article concerns the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Sonic the Hedgehog and the documented Anniversary Mode in Sonic Origins. The Game Gear version is a distinct game with different emerald mechanics, and rules from one version should not be applied automatically to another. The official material cited here also does not establish that every modern port retains identical rules.
