Spoiler warning: this article covers major Borderlands 3 story details. Maya dies during the main story. In the Promethea Vault sequence, Troy Calypso drains her Siren power and kills her while Ava is caught up in the confrontation. The story leaves Ava to deal with the loss of her mentor.
How Maya dies in the main story
Maya’s death happens in the main campaign, not in optional content or a DLC. The sequence is tied to the Calypso Twins’ plot to take Sirens’ power, and it plays out at the Promethea Vault. The sources reviewed for this article confirm the event itself but do not include a full transcript of the scene, so the sequence is described here only at the level of what happens.

- The confrontation at Promethea. The scene takes place at the Promethea Vault, where Ava is present and becomes part of a chaotic fight.
- Troy drains Maya’s Siren power. Troy Calypso takes the Siren power that Maya holds.
- Maya is killed. The loss of her power is fatal in this sequence, and the story leaves Ava to deal with the aftermath.
Who is responsible
Troy is the character who kills Maya. Ava’s presence is relevant context because the fight happens around her, but the sources do not show Ava directly killing Maya, and they do not show that Ava could have changed the outcome. Readers who remember the scene differently should check the game itself, since the official material does not include the exact dialogue.
Who Maya is and why her death matters
Maya is a Siren and an experienced Vault Hunter. She left the religious order on Athenas to become a Vault Hunter, then returned to protect the Order, learn more about Sirens, and train Ava. The official 2K character guide establishes this mentor and apprentice relationship, which is why her death lands on Ava in a personal way rather than only as a plot development.

Is Maya coming back?
No official source describes Maya being resurrected in the main story or in any playable scene. Two later pieces of material are sometimes mistaken for a return, and they are different in content and context.
Behind-the-scenes funeral content
A 2K patch note dated August 5, 2021 records the addition of localized audio for behind-the-scenes content about Maya’s funeral. The note is in Spanish on 2K’s patch-note page. This is supplementary development material. It is not a new playable scene and it does not bring Maya back.

Maya in Krieg’s perspective
The Xbox listing for Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck, a DLC, says players experience Krieg’s view of fan-favorite characters, including Maya, whom the listing calls “the light of his twisted life.” That description places Maya inside Krieg’s point of view. It does not indicate that she survived the main story. The listing gives a release date of September 10, 2020 and says the DLC is compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
What Director’s Cut changes for Ava
Director’s Cut focuses on Ava. It adds Ava-led murder mystery missions set across Pandora, Promethea, Eden-6, and Nekrotafeyo, along with behind-the-scenes content. The 2K and Xbox descriptions say these missions may include clues tied to the main story. Neither description says Maya is brought back, so Director’s Cut should be read as expanding Ava’s role rather than as a reversal of Maya’s fate.

Where to play the story
Borderlands 3 is listed on the official PlayStation store page for PS4 and PS5. Playing the main campaign is the only way to see the Promethea Vault sequence in context, and the official sources do not provide any other way to view the scene.
