Sleeping in a Minecraft bed advances the night and sets your individual Overworld respawn point. It also resets the no-sleep condition linked to phantom attacks. The main risks: a moved or obstructed bed may no longer work as your respawn point, and ordinary beds can explode in dimensions where beds are unsafe.
What a bed does when you use it
- Advances the night: sleeping can move the world to daytime, subject to multiplayer requirements and world settings.
- Sets your respawn point: a bed in the Overworld records where you will return if you die, provided the point is still usable.
- Resets phantom pressure: sleeping prevents the no-sleep condition associated with phantom attacks from continuing.
How the respawn point works
Mojang’s spawning and dying guide says sleeping in a bed sets your Overworld respawn point. You can also use a bed during daytime to set the point without sleeping. If you die, you respawn there only if the bed and location remain usable.
The saved point does not follow the bed if you move it. After relocating a bed, use it again at its new location to set a new respawn point. Keep it somewhere accessible and clear of obstructions; if the old point cannot be used, you may respawn elsewhere according to the world’s rules.
Sleeping and phantom attacks
Mojang’s phantom guide says phantoms appear in the Overworld night sky above players who have not slept for at least an hour, which the guide describes as three in-game days. They circle and dive at players. Sleeping resets this no-sleep condition.

Where to place a bed—and where not to use one
Use an Overworld bed in a safe, reachable spot. Do not assume an ordinary bed is safe in the Nether or the End: beds can explode in other dimensions. In Bedrock, the RespawnBlocksExplode game rule controls whether beds and respawn anchors explode in other dimensions. That setting is specific to Bedrock’s rules and may be changed in a world.

What changes in multiplayer or with game rules
Not every multiplayer world requires the same share of players to sleep. Microsoft’s stable Bedrock GameRule reference defines PlayersSleepingPercentage as the percentage of players required to sleep before advancing to the next day. The actual threshold depends on the world’s configuration.
Bedrock also has a DoInsomnia rule controlling effects of not sleeping, including phantom spawning. Microsoft’s gamerule guide gives doinsomnia false as an example for disabling phantoms and other no-sleep effects. These are Bedrock settings; server and world configuration matter.

Snapshot features are not universal release behavior
Some official Java snapshot notes describe experimental or snapshot-specific bed behavior. Java Snapshot 25w42a documents a configurable minecraft:gameplay/bed_rule that can allow beds always, only when dark, or never. These notes do not establish that the rule is available in every release.
Java 26.3 Snapshot 3 describes a single-use Straw Bed that passes the night without setting a spawn point. The snapshot notes say it is crafted from three hay bales to yield four, is destroyed after one use, and cannot be used in the Nether or End. Check the release and edition you are playing before relying on either snapshot feature: they should not be treated as standard behavior across Minecraft versions.

Getting and using a bed
