Packed ice and blue ice do not melt from nearby light sources, making them the reliable choices for brightly lit builds. Ordinary ice behaves differently: it can melt under sufficiently bright block light, while sunlight does not melt it according to the cited light reference. Frosted ice is temporary and can melt under qualifying light, including sunlight.
Which Minecraft ice blocks don’t melt?
Packed ice and blue ice are the light-resistant options. Mojang describes packed ice as a block that “doesn’t turn into a puddle under the glare of light sources” in its Block of the Week: Ice article. The blue ice reference likewise says it does not melt near light sources.
| Block | Effect of block light | Effect of sunlight | Build use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Packed ice | Does not melt from nearby light sources, according to Mojang’s article. | Not separately stated in that article. | Stable choice for a brightly lit build. |
| Blue ice | Does not melt near light sources, according to the blue ice reference. | Not separately stated in that reference. | Stable choice for a brightly lit build. |
| Ordinary ice | Can melt at sufficiently high block-light levels. | Sunlight does not cause it to melt, according to the light reference. | Use with care around bright block-light sources. |
| Frosted ice | Can melt under qualifying light. | Sunlight can contribute to melting. | Temporary block, not a permanent substitute for packed or blue ice. |
Does packed ice melt near torches?
No. Packed ice does not turn into water under light sources, so it is the straightforward choice when you want an ice block beside torches or other lighting. Mojang notes that packed ice can be found in Ice Spikes biomes and that a Silk Touch pickaxe is needed to harvest it intact; see its packed ice article.
Does blue ice melt?
Blue ice also does not melt near light sources, according to the blue ice reference. It is another suitable option for a lit build.

Does ordinary ice melt in sunlight?
No, not according to the cited light reference: sunlight does not affect ordinary ice melting. Ordinary ice can still melt from sufficiently high block light, such as light emitted by a source in the world. The reference notes that at block-light level 10, ice neither forms nor melts, but that detail should not be treated as a universal threshold across every edition and version.
Why is frosted ice different?
Frosted ice is a temporary block with its own melting behavior. Under qualifying light, including sunlight, its age advances; when it reaches age 4, it turns into water. The frosted ice reference describes this mechanic. For a permanent-looking ice surface in a bright area, choose packed ice or blue ice instead.

Choosing ice for a build
- Use packed ice or blue ice when the block needs to stay intact near lights.
- Use ordinary ice cautiously around bright block-light sources; sunlight alone is not identified as a cause of melting.
- Do not rely on frosted ice as a permanent block, since qualifying light can turn it into water.
The cited references do not establish a complete Java-versus-Bedrock comparison for every ice variant, edition, and version, so these behaviors should not be taken as a full cross-edition mechanics chart.
