What happens at the end of a No Man’s Sky expedition depends on how it was started. A run launched from your existing save through the Space Anomaly Expedition Terminus finishes at that same terminal, where you return selected items and technology to your primary save. A run started as a fresh expedition save does not delete anything: the save stays available and converts to Normal mode, but once the time limit passes, no further expedition rewards can be earned. Rewards earned during an expedition can also be claimed on your other saves.
Check how your expedition was started
Hello Games has documented two routes. They share a reward system but differ in how items come back and what happens when the clock runs out.
| Situation | Launched from an existing save (Omega, Update 4.5) | Started as a fresh expedition save (original Expeditions update) |
|---|---|---|
| Where the run begins | Space Anomaly Expedition Terminus on your primary save | A new game started for the expedition |
| Item and technology return | Handled at the same terminal once the expedition is complete | Not described in the original Expeditions announcement |
| Units, nanites, Quicksilver | Return automatically to the primary save | Not described in the original Expeditions announcement |
| When the timer ends | Not stated for this route in the Omega announcement | Save remains available and converts to Normal mode; no further rewards can be earned |
| Early conversion | Documented only for a run the player has entirely completed (Endurance update) | Documented only for a run the player has entirely completed (Endurance update) |
| Claiming rewards on other saves | Free redemption at the Quicksilver Synthesis Companion aboard the Space Anomaly, in any game mode | Same Quicksilver Synthesis Companion redemption |
Finishing an expedition launched from an existing save
Omega introduced the option to start an expedition from your primary save using the Space Anomaly Expedition Terminus. Before starting, you can load that terminal with a selection of items and packaged equipment, and retrieve the stored items when you reach the Anomaly. You can also pause the expedition, return to your primary save, and switch back later.
Return your items and technology at the terminal
- Once the expedition is complete, return to the Space Anomaly Expedition Terminus that started the run.
- Choose the items and technology you want to bring back to your primary save. The same terminal handles this return.
- Anything you leave unwanted is sold and converted into units or nanites, according to the Omega announcement.
Hello Games’ description does not give item slot limits or the exact conversion rate for unwanted items, so do not plan around specific numbers.

Progress that returns automatically
The Omega announcement lists several things that move to your primary save without a manual step:
- Earned units, nanites, and Quicksilver.
- Discoveries made during the expedition.
- Bases built during the expedition, which are shared to the primary save.
- Additional units or nanites tied to progress measures, including Sentinels killed, words learned, and base parts constructed. The announcement does not state the amounts per measure.
Copying your Multi-Tool or starship
Omega also lets you create a copy of your primary Multi-Tool or starship at the terminal during an expedition. This is useful for bringing your own equipment into the run or returning finds to the primary save. It is a separate mechanic from ordinary item return, so do not expect the same behavior from the stored-items step above.

Finishing a fresh expedition save
The original Expedition Mode began as a new game rather than from your existing save. Once the expedition ends, the save is kept and becomes a Normal mode save, so you keep playing from where you finished. What changes is the reward window.
When the timer runs out
The original Expeditions announcement says that when the available time runs out, the save remains available and converts to Normal mode. No further expedition rewards can be earned after that point. If you want the rewards, finish the expedition before the deadline.

Ending early after full completion
The Endurance update says a player who has entirely completed an expedition may end it early and convert the save to Normal mode ahead of the deadline. This option is tied to full completion. Do not assume an unfinished run can be ended the same way.
Conversion rules can differ by expedition
Later expeditions can carry their own conversion notes. Expedition Seventeen: Titan, announced by Hello Games on February 12, 2025 for version 5.55, could be started either from the Space Anomaly Expedition Terminus or from a fresh new save, with the option to convert that save to Normal mode later. Hello Games said a converted save kept access to purple star systems, but the story mission In Stellar Multitudes was not available. That exception applies to Titan. Read the official notes for any expedition you are playing before assuming the same result.

Spending expedition rewards on other saves
Rewards earned from Expeditions can be redeemed for free on other saves in any game mode. You do this at the Quicksilver Synthesis Companion aboard the Space Anomaly. The Titan announcement says earned rewards from that expedition could be redeemed across all save games. This is account-level reward redemption, separate from moving items and technology through the terminal described above.
