Uninstalling the Steam client removes Steam and any game content installed on that computer. It does not, by itself, delete your Steam account or the licenses attached to it, and it does not guarantee your saves. Whether you keep a game depends on three separate things: where the game files sit, whether the game’s saves sync to Steam Cloud, and whether you are deleting the client or the account.
Start by deciding what “delete Steam” means
Most people asking this question mean uninstalling Steam from one computer. Some mean deleting their Steam account. These are different actions with different consequences, and Steam’s support pages treat them separately.
| Action | What it removes | Do you keep your games? |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstall Steam from a computer | The Steam client and installed game content on that machine | Your purchased games remain on your account. Installed files are removed unless you move steamapps first. Cloud-synced saves are not affected by the uninstall itself, but local-only saves may be lost. |
| Delete your Steam account | Game licenses and associated account information, permanently | No. Steam Support states that account deletion permanently removes game licenses and associated information. |
| Move Steam to another computer | Nothing, if you copy the install correctly | Yes, if you back up steamapps and sign in to the same account on the new machine. |
The rest of this article covers the first and third actions. Account deletion is covered at the end because it is irreversible.
What uninstalling Steam removes from your computer
On Windows, Steam’s uninstall page says the process “will remove Steam and any installed game content from your machine.” The uninstaller deletes the folder where Steam was installed, which by default is C:Program Files (x86)Steam. Your games’ installed files live inside that folder, in steamapps, unless you chose a different install location.

That means the installed copy of each game is gone after an uninstall. Your library, which is tied to your account, is not. You can download the games again after reinstalling Steam and signing in.
How to uninstall Steam on Windows and keep your downloaded games
Use this order. Skipping step 2 is the most common reason people lose large downloads.
- Exit Steam completely, so no Steam process is running.
- Open the Steam installation folder (default
C:Program Files (x86)Steam, or the custom location you chose during installation). - Move the
steamappsfolder outside the Steam directory, to a separate drive or folder. Steam’s guidance is to do this before uninstalling if you want to keep game files. Copying is safer than cutting until you have confirmed the copy is complete. - Run the uninstall. Steam’s Windows page describes the removal as deleting the Steam installation folder, so anything left inside it will be deleted.
- When you reinstall Steam, move
steamappsback into the new Steam folder and sign in with the same account.
When the install folder contains unrelated files
If Steam was installed into a folder that also holds unrelated data, do not run the uninstaller. Steam warns that the uninstaller deletes the whole Steam installation folder. In that case, remove only Steam-related files manually. Steam presents manual removal of registry entries as a last resort and warns that registry changes need care, so do not edit the registry unless you have a specific reason and a backup.
What happens to your game files on Mac
Steam’s Mac guidance uses different removal steps from the Windows procedure. If you want to keep downloaded games and any local saves stored in the game folders, retain the SteamApps folder before removing the application. Follow the steps on Steam’s Removing and Reinstalling Steam on a Mac page rather than the Windows instructions.

Your saves: three places they can live
Saves are the part most people get wrong, because there is no single rule that applies to every game. Steam’s guidance points to three locations.
1. Steam Cloud
Steam Cloud can store saves, settings, profile statistics, and other user-specific data. Each game decides which files it uploads, and developers control how Cloud is used. A game that supports Steam Cloud shows the Cloud logo on its Steam Store page, but the logo does not tell you which files are synced. For that, check the game’s Steam Community or developer documentation.
Cloud-synced saves survive an uninstall, because they live on Steam’s servers. Before you uninstall, confirm sync has completed. Steam warns that offline play can delay syncing and that choosing to play despite a sync error can create conflicts or lose progress.
2. Local saves
If a game does not use Cloud, progress is saved on the machine. Steam says many games do not use Steam Cloud for saves, and where local saves go is set by the developer. With Cloud disabled, progress that would otherwise sync is saved locally. Local saves may be inside the game folder, inside your user profile, or elsewhere. Look up the game’s documented save location before you remove anything.

3. Third-party saves in Documents
Steam says that for some non-Cloud games, saves may be under DocumentsMy Games. Steam’s moving guidance notes that other paths may apply, and the developer determines the location.
Back up before you uninstall
Steam is clear that you should not assume moving steamapps is enough if you care about progress. Before removing anything, work through this checklist.
- Open each game’s Steam Store page and note whether it carries the Cloud logo.
- Launch each Cloud game while online and let sync finish before you close Steam.
- For games without Cloud, copy the save folder documented by the developer to a separate location.
- Keep a copy of
userdata, which Steam’s moving instructions also discuss, along withsteamapps. - Verify the copies open correctly before you delete the originals.
Steam says it is unlikely to recover lost Cloud data and cannot recover lost saves or resolve Cloud conflicts. A backup you make yourself is the only fallback.

Yes, but only through the Steam client. Steam’s Mac page states: “The Steam application is required to play all games purchased through Steam, as well as retail games registered to Steam.” Keeping the game files on disk does not replace that requirement.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
After reinstalling, sign in to the same account to see your library. If you preserved steamapps, Steam can use those installed files and avoid downloading the game content again. If you did not, expect to download each game again.
Troubleshooting: common problems after reinstalling
- Games do not appear: confirm you signed in to the account that bought them, not a second account.
- Installed games want to download again: confirm
steamappswas moved back into the Steam folder you reinstalled, not a different folder. - Progress is older than expected: the game may have synced from a different machine, or local saves were used. Check the game’s Cloud status and your backup copies before playing further, because playing on an out-of-date save can create conflicts.
Deleting your account is a different and permanent step
Account deletion permanently removes game licenses and associated account information. Steam Support describes a 30-day restricted queue after it verifies ownership. Uninstalling Steam from a computer does none of this. If you only want to stop using Steam on one machine, uninstalling is the reversible option; deleting the account is not.
Official wording on uninstalling
Steam Support’s uninstall page states: “This process will remove Steam and any installed game content from your machine.” The statement is attributed to Steam Support as an organization; no individual is named.
